When I hear news like this I truly begin to doubt whether the Israeli government even wants peace.

How in hell is building 700 new settler houses on occupied Palestinian land even remotely wise? Especially in the context of today’s particularly flammable situation. PUblic anger at Israel among Arabs has never been higher in the wake of the onslaut in Lebanon, and recent actions by Hamas and Hezbollah show that these two entities will try their beast to create as much trouble for Israel at even the slightest provocation. These new settlements are just that- a provocation. They are basically an act of war. I don’t see how anyone can expect Arabs to believe the Israeli government wants peace when they see news like this. What’s the rationale in building 700 new homes if any peace process clause is going to ask for the settlements in the West Bank to be relocated? Give me a break…

I’ll tell you why people live in Maaleh Adumim. It’s 10 minutes from Jerusalem. It costs an average of $150,000 – $175,000 to buy a 3 bedroom apartment here, as opposed to double that in Jerusalem. It used to be Jordan – pre-1967. For most people living there, it’s just another suburb. People in Jerusalem, both Jews and Arabs, do not consider people living in Maaleh Adumim to be “settlers”. I live in Maaleh Adumim. I moved there because my elderly dad lived there and I wanted to be close to him. Since, my kids have their schools and friends there, and it’s difficult to up and go. That green line is imaginary to me anyways – made by politicians. We should be living together anyways and not be partitioned by walls and checkpoints. I’d feel alot guiltier had I lived in Ramat Aviv in Tel Aviv where an Arab village was destroyed in 1948 to make way for this “trendy” neighborhood.
