President Bush Addresses the UN on the Middle East
An english transcript may be found here.
The usual stuff about democracy and American achievements, metioning Hezbollah without transition in the same breath as 19-11 and Al Qaeda.
At the start of the 21st century, it is clear that the world is engaged in a great ideological struggle, between extremists who use terror as a weapon to create fear, and moderate people who work for peace.
Five years ago, I stood at this podium and called on the community of nations to defend civilization and build a more hopeful future. This is still the great challenge of our time; it is the calling of our generation.
Yeah sure, president Bush defender of civilisation, hard to believe.
He mentions the Universal Declaration of Human Rights very proudly although working to bring the U.S. openly out of compliance with the geneva conventions.
Anyway he mentions most countries by name:
Algeria has held its first competitive presidential election, and the military remained neutral. The United Arab Emirates recently announced that half of the seats in its Federal National Council will be chosen by elections. Kuwait held elections in which women were allowed to vote and run for office for the first time. Citizens have voted in municipal elections in Saudi Arabia, in parliamentary elections in Jordan and Bahrain, and in multiparty presidential elections in Yemen and Egypt
He speaks directly (why I mention it here) to:
Iraqis
Afghans
Lebanese
Iranians
Syrians
(Darfurians?)
Palestinians
Worth a read.
I’m just making sure everyone knows when someone’s talking to them!

From your post I take you don’t believe Hezbollah should be in the same category as Al Qaeda?
To some extent, you do have a point. But I ask you to consider this and consider this.
Well they certainly weren’t involved in 9-11, what ever Hezbollahs own sins may be.
Basically the 9-11, al-qaeda, Lebanon in one paragraph.
That seems reather misleading.
Nice short post on the Prez’s speech. I suppose it deserves some kind of mention here. I’m not keen as I once was, on reading it–too simple syntax for me
I preferred Clintons way with words— What I am waiting for is a president of a world superpower to express sincere humility and gratitude towards others…to encourage others to unite and become regional partners with the US in a global effort to stop AIDS, support the World Court, end secret prisons–excuse me, “Detention Centers”– encourage a really fair and just peace between Israel and Palestine, etc. etc. etc. etc. If that speech is on the schedule, then let me know
This one seemed to address the Israel-Palestine issue quite well I think:What he essentialy said was that both sides suffer and he called, again, for two states for two people, living side by side in peace.
And Joel- he didn’t even hint that Hizzb’Allah were involved in 9-11, he simply put them with Al-Qaeda as being terrorists, which seems to be rather true.
I see Joel’s point here, which is why I think that this:
… is a problem.
And Lisa Beyer does a great job explaining why.
