Darfur Awareness: Contacts and coverage
Roger Simon, the Co-founder/CEO of Pajamas Media will be adding has added a link to our campaign. Thanks Roger!
In even better news, Jana El Horr from the American Islamic Congress (AIC) will be helping us work on the project. The great thing is that Jana is already working to start a website in Arabic where the participants change the narrative and present this conflict as inter-Muslim and not between Africans and Arabs.
Here’s a little about Jana:
Jana El Horr is the American Islamic Congress’ Washington, DC Program Director and is spearheading efforts to strengthen Arab-Muslim participation in the anti-genocide movement. A Fulbright Scholar, she has worked extensively with issues of conflict resolution in the Middle East and organized youth training seminars on issues of leadership, youth empowerment, and human rights. Of Iraqi-Lebanese background, Jana speaks regularly on issues of pluralism in Islam and lectures on the social, political and developmental challenges in the Middle East region. She is a founding member of the Center for Conflict Resolution and Peace-building (CCRP) in Lebanon – an NGO dedicated to sustainable development and peace-building through dialogue – and she is currently building training programs on cultural diversity and minority rights for the Council of Europe and the European Commission. Jana works closely with Save Darfur on outreach to the American Muslim community, and collaborates with myriad interfaith and activist groups in the DC metro area to raise awareness about the current crisis in Sudan.
She also speaks Hebrew. How cool is that?
Jana and I will talk on Monday and I will let you guys know what we came up with. Like us, Jana’s main concern is the Arab public and media outlets, they are the ones we should really be targeting.

Hi Esra’a and others
I just got an email back from Israel for Dafur (http://www.israelfordarfur.org/) and Debbie is very excited about the project, definitely is going to promote it and she is putting me in contact with a number of other groups as well to get the word out. I’ve written several other places but have yet to hear back from them. When my life returns to being a life on Friday I will be contacting more.
I’m more concerned with getting the Arab sites involved – they are one of our biggest targets. They reach the people we should direct this information to. At this point however the more contacts we have, the better.
Salamou alikum.
Calling tribal disputes in Darfur is a big lie. Big countries want to benefit from its oil as well as southern region. UN had been arming rebels so they could go on with their plan of splitting the country completely so they could get in control of natural resources.
Israelis once lived in Sudan after WWII. They are ARABPHOBIC, not because they really care. After 9/11 how many ANTI-TERROR conventions have they joined? a lot; what’s being shouted as a responsible speaker [MUSLIMS].
Fur and Zaghawa had been taking turns of attacking villages up till this date. Janjaweed were assigned by Al Sadiq Al Mahdi, who is a former gov’t leader, for this they are called gov’t backed up militia.
Christians priests now found a way of giving food to starving Muslim kids in order to convert.
Refugees and rebels in outer world are calling for distruction of the region.
Abdel Aal, I almost pissed myself laughing.
Yes Jews Jews Jews Jews… they did it.
Priest who are saving starving children are trying to convert them. Hold on, if they are starving, how come you are not feeding these children? Is it because you want these blackies dead? Maybe the Jews and the Westerners are preventing your from feeding the starving children?
You need your tin foil hat and find a refrigerator to sit in.
Salam ya Abdel Aal, Chad is the one arming rebels and helping them and YES this IS a tribal conflict on a micro-level and a struggle for fair share of wealth/power between the oppressed people of Darfur and Khartoum on a macro-level. Israel was involved in the north-south war but I highly doubt it’s involved in Darfur. In fact those are accusations thrown by the government to create distraction.
If you want to convince me of your poinst then show me some links or news articles. I welcome debate with you and I hope to do so respectfully.
Wassalam
Esra’a –if the main focus is to get Arab sites involved perhaps we can impose on Sankar (who has done an absolutely fabulous job!) to create some banners and buttons with the slogans in arabic in addition to the english ones. Also, I was thinking maybe some small ones about the size of the mideast youth and the Me Faith buttons off to the right on this page saying something really simple like “Stop the genocide. I Blog for Darfur” or something like that. People may be more willing to add a small button than a large banner or sizeable button to their sites.
