Middle East Dilemma
Author: Bashar (Jordan) - December 2, 2006
I have been asked a very good question by a Lebanese friend concerning the Middle east situation, that is (Lexus or olive Tree?)
My answer was “maybe some people are pursuing prosperity and development (Lexus) and the rest, which are the majority, are pursuing to retain identity and traditions (Olive Tree).
lets have your say in this
Lexus or olive Tree?

Bashar-
Majority? I think olive tree. But on closer inspection…it is probably a relative minority imposing its will on those that want Lexus or perhaps a majority that hardly know what the Lexus has to offer because they have not really seen through the forest of olive trees.
What about: POWER. Plain, old, reliable, pure, unadulterated power. Whether driven by the Lexus or olive tree. Whether driven by money or religion. History or modernity.
I don’t understand how the two are mutually exclusive. I think the Lexus is probably the most desirable. Everyone wants wealth, and that’s true whether we’re talking about Egyptians, Emiratis, Israelis, or Iraqis. However, there are elements within society that seek to uphold tradition at the expense of modernity. I think the elites that run most MIddle Eastern countries are more concerned with the Lexus. Even the individuals who aspire to retain the olive tree, would have no qualms about sacrificing a little identity for a little more pay.
the future should be something like olivexus - prosperity and development without losing identity - a compromize between tradition & development, but leaving traditions behind that hinder any development..
