Scholarship opportunity for young journalists
Hello everybody !
I found this on internet and I thought it might be interesting for some of you..
If you are a youth journalist it will definitely be very interesting:
Applications must be received by July 16, 2007
Who will benefit: Newspaper and online editors and political reporters responsible for planning and carrying out their organization’s 2008 election coverage.Tear up your old election plans. Re-imagine how your newsroom can make coverage of the 2008 Election the most informative, interactive and useful ever. Will you poll? Map? Blog? How will you decide which issues to cover — and how will that influence the public debate? You’ll learn how readers can help you plan more relevant coverage, how the campaigns will use technology to influence your coverage, where to access databases and online tools to deepen reporting and how to cover communities and issues the campaigns are ignoring.
To apply for the fellowship, complete the Poynter application: http://www.poynter.org/seminar/2007_application.pdf and send in your application to:
AAJA/Poynter Institute Fellowship

Reporting, Writing & Editing for the Ethnic Media – November 4-7, 2007
Poynter Deadline: September 5, 2007
Who will benefit: Writers, photojournalists and editors working in ethnic media organizations. Elevate your reporting and storytelling skills so you can more completely cover your community. Join a select group of reporters, photojournalists and editors who’ll focus on the core elements of excellent journalism. You’ll learn to develop your skills in interviewing, reporting, writing, photojournalism and ethical decision making, to use a range of story forms to tell powerful stories, to find untold stories and to explore the value of collaborative reporting partnerships

I am on the Asian American Journalists Association and I have to say that while some are trying to help Arab Americans to move ahead in journalism, many react with fright that somehow having an “Arab” on a committee will cause people to freak out … so they like to call us “Middle Eastern” … I am on the AAJA Mediia Watch List and any comments I try to add about Arabs being discriminated against are usually ignored …
I am also on the Diversity Committee of the Society of Professional Journalists and they have a strong commitment to help Arab American journalists organize better. IT is our problem, of course. We Arab journalists in the US tend to fight each other and not wantr to work together. There are several groups and none of them except our group — NAAJA-US.com — want to network with other Arab journalism groups).
As for Poynter, it’s a typically mainstream American media that does not open doors to Arab American journalists. Like most mainstream American media, they fear the backlash of allowing Arab AMerican journalists to participate in their organization as writers or editors, and when they talk about the “ethnic media” they rarely are talking about Arabs or Muslims …
That’s only my experience having 32 years of journalism experience in the United States, which is very anti-Arab but in a very sophisticated way. (Kind of like, it’s very hot in Arizona, but it is a dry heat

Poynter seems to be the least diverse media service… but they have very cool ethics tool kits for worldwide news organizations.
