Al Jazeera reported this morning that a female Iranian activist has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for attending two banned rallies, where she was accused of spreading propaganda against the (corrupt) system.

“Roya Toloui was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment on the charge of attending the mentioned gatherings and one year’s imprisonment on the charge of propaganda activity against the system,” Sotoudeh [her lawyer] told ISNA.

It was not clear whether Toloui was in the court when the sentence was announced or whether she was tried in absentia.

Last month, a court in Tehran handed down partly suspended prison sentences of up to four years against two female activists who attended a banned rally in the capital to demand greater women’s rights, according to Iranian media.

About 100 women protested in Tehran in June against unequal inheritance laws, the difficulties women in Iran face getting a divorce, and the fact their court testimony is worth half that of men.

According to Human Rights Watch, six women have been convicted after taking part in that protest.

And here’s the infuriating conclusion:

Iran says it does not discriminate against women and says its rules are based on the Sharia.

Which Sharia, the one that they have re-written?

Guys, I think it would only be fair for us, as strong believers of human rights, to campaign against this. We have the power to increase international awareness regarding this, the way we did with Kareem, Haleh, and 4 Chinese prisoners.

You know I’ve got many Iranian friends and they’re some of the nicest most hospitable people I know but seriously this shit is too much so I won’t even try to be polite.

Those mullah assholes blaming all this garbage they do on “Sharia”, need to burn in hell.

I smacked my sister. She wasn’t covering her hair. Hey don’t blame me. Sharia told me to do so. Blame Sharia.

And Muslims still want to complain about how Islam has a bad name. Best of all, most do nothing!
