Have A Cup of Tea in Damascus
As the US contiunes to fight the war in Iraq there are more and more issues that are hurting the Iraqi people. This is a piece from the New York Times about the new and booming business of sex in Syria.
The money quote:
Even in central Damascus, men freely talk of being approached by pimps trawling for customers outside juice shops and shawarma sandwich stalls, and of women walking up to passing men, an act unthinkable in Arab culture, and asking in Iraqi-accented Arabic if the men would like to “have a cup of tea.”
You should read it and pass it along to your “spreading democracy” friends and ask them if they also thought about spreading STDs around the Middle East as well.

What the hell has this got to do with democracy, this is called prostitution! it’s got nothing to do with democracy!
The NYT published a nearly identical story a few years ago.
Josef, did you not know that part of liberation is sexual liberation? Right? Did I understand correctly?
No I was making a crass joke. The idea that starting a war in Iraq would bring anything but problems to the region. SH is gone but there are just as many problems now as there were before the war started, if not and most likely more. It has nothing to do with democracy and that is the point.
One question what did you mean ” spreading democracy friends” ?!? and who are you reffering this question to?!?
Probably talking about the Americans or whom ever thinks that the US is in Iraq to spread democracy.
They are our friends?!? we invited them?!?
I think everyone in the middle east knew that when they entered Iraq it will backfire!
Jina you are right. I was joking about my “friends.” and Wafa- They are not my friends but they really did believe it was to spread democracy/get WMDs/end the terror of SH/whatever.
I’ve noted this on Sexual Terrorism as well… this is only one of the many horrific consequences of the Iraqi war. This has been going on since 2003 at least with hardly anyone reporting such cases, it’s good to see the NY Times spreading awareness on it.
