An Interesting Opportunity
Speaking again of women rights,I would like to announce an interesting conference that will tackle violence against women, and will take place at the United Nations University/International Leadership Institute UNU/ILI, which is based in Amman-Jordan.
Let me first begin by telling you a bit about the concept of the United Nations University…
The United Nations University or shortly UNU is one of the branches of the UN and has its headquarter in Tokyo-Japan.
The UNU has institutes in various parts of the world, such as; the Netherlands,Canada,France, The U.S, Venzuella, Northern Ireland, each focusing on different issues of concern to the UN, like the environment, water, conflict resolution, and many more.
The UNU chose Jordan to base its international leadership institute in .
UNU/ILI holds a series of conferences on leadership, educational, social, environmental, and of course youth and women aspects of it.

I have acted as a volunteer/freelance for 2 years at UNU/ILI , it was an amazingly rewarding experience that I’ll always be grateful for.
Dr.Ibtesam Alatiyat-Programme Officer encharged of youth and women affairs- is organising an international youth leadership course titled:
Leadership towards the Elimination of all Forms of Violence against Women.
31 July – 3 August, 2007
I’ve worked for Dr.Alatiyat during the organisation of 2 leadership courses, I admire her, for her sincere dedication to achieving change in our Middle Eastern societies.
I aploaded the Call for Participation, Concept and Programme, and Application Form to attend the conference.
Dr.Alatiyat informed me that even though the topic is about violence against women , she would like to have a gendre balanced group of participants.
She also told me that as it’s a youth course, for that the age of the participants as it appears in the concept paper is 20-25, but from my experience with UNU/ILI, they are a bit flexible, so it could go up to 28, as it did in the last couple of youth leadership courses.
I highly encourage you all to apply, as UNU/ILI courses are always very interesting.
If you’re interested , you should send your application form to Dr.Ibtesam Alatiyat at alatiyat@la.unu.edu and her intern Rebecca Weigaard at intern10@la.unu.edu .
The deadline for submitting your application is June,10, the application as you will see is not that long.
you could also read more about UNU as a whole at www.unu.edu
And about UNU/ILI at www.la.unu.edu
I hope you find it interesting to apply, and
I look forward to seeing some of you in Amman:)

is there a way for me to contact you?
Oh sorry , I forgot to mention my e-mail address it’s mohammad.azraq@gmail.com
Hello ,
It’s 3 am and hope you can understand how sleepy I am now ! : )
I’m Ausama from Iraq – I’m a friend of Mohammed Alazraq , I’m an ex-participant in the last UNU/ILI course which was ” politicization of religion and future democracy in the middle east ” .
Before that course I thought that I knew what politicization or religious movement , I guess I was partially wrong with that .
this course gave me more perspective about different issues ,I had the opportunity to meet differnet people from different nationalities , it was great to interact with them to show them what you are , to let them know how do you think and to know how do they think .
It’s amazing to share and hear and to feel that you’re not different than others .
another exciting part of the course is to be mentored and taught by different international professionals , professors .
the most important thing of all that you will get a certificate of the UNU/ILI .
still I’m in contact with most of the peopel that I knew from that course and i’m really proud of all of that .
I’m sure whoever will experience this , whoever see Dr.ibtisam will feel the same thing.
finally I just wanna thank blue for giving me the opportunity for that course just like he’s doing here too .
Thank You
Sounds great Ausama, thanks a lot for stopping by. The current topic is also a very important one and wish to see Saudis and more Gulf participants attending soon.
This looks a truly captivating event, and will hopefully deal with the issue of VAW, which has long been ignored by society. Speaking as a past participant of the last UNU/ILI course, dealing with Politics and religion, I am sure it will be an equally engaging event, with much scope for discussion and thought…
This is very interesting!
I’m part of a similar project here. We organize regular debates/meetings/campaigns and events to tackle several issues such as violence against women/harassment/religion etc…
This is very interesting, I will check out their website and program
I just had a look at the programme to be discussed.. very interesting topics to be tackled..
Damn.. I wish I could.. but can’t make it.
who ever goes should write a briefing about it here..
Thank you fo sharing Mohammad.. and it would be really nice to mention and post similar seminars that might be going on for who ever’s interested to attend.
this program sounds very interesting, actually what is organized by the ILI is very interesting and beneftial. I’ve learned a lot by participating in the course titled: “politicization of religions and the future of democracy in the Middle East” which was organized by the UNU/ILI, it really added a lot of experience to me.
As we learned more about the politicization of religions and religionization of politics as well. We attended lectures for highly professional academics that tackled and analyzed the reasons behind the current situations in the Arab world.
We were from about 22 countries having direct dialogue with each other, exchanging experience between each other and trying to reach to common solutions for the current problems that face all of us.
I learned a lot from having such kind of dialogues and from attending such lectures that taught me the tools that we can use in order to reform the current situations.
Hey all,
i am from lebanon and i participated in the course “politicization of religion and the future of democracy in the ME” last november.
i think it was the first one made by the UNU, so we where like guinea pigs, hehe. the course was very insightful, we had speakers all over the world, and participants from all over the world. of course the course and organization had flaws, like everything else they are not perfect. my friend participated in the second course which was about media and she liked it very much. i guess what i would like to say, the conference is more than what it is discussed, it is like a forum to discuss a variety of issues with experts, with people from all over the world. it is a place where u can either reject ur prejudices abt people or reinforce them. its an opportunity to re-explore ur mind, and have a different perspective about many things, and also its a great opportunity to see jordan! and last but not least you will meet Blue, hehe..
yalla good luck, and i think i will apply!
Nabil, thank you very much for your comment, but in fact ” Youth Leadership, the Politicisation of Religion, and the Future of Democracy in the Middle East”,in which you participated wasn’t the first conducted by UNU/ILI.
UNU/ILI was established in 1995, and it holds between 11-12 conferences every year.
However, your course was the fourth leardership course dedicated to youth, and the first for Dr.Ibtesam at UNU/ILI.
Thank you again for your comments, all of yu
Hello, as a participant of last year’s conference on “Youth Leadership, Politicisation of Religion, and the Future of Democracy in the Middle East”, I would definitely recommend the upcoming programme at the UNU/ILI. This organisation does excellent work bringing together speakers and unique participants from around the globe. It is an excellent forum to discuss controversial topics, make global friendships, and ponder the topic following the completion of the conference.
Hello all, I was a former UNU/IL participant, and I do recommend participation to everyone. I’m from the states, and I loved exchanging ideas and information with all the participants. My one point of advice, however: stand up and say something, don’t be afraid to criticize. Listening and nodding your head won’t get you anywhere. Its a good organization, only made better by more participation.
Hi everybody,
I was also on of the participants of UNU/IL about †Youth Leadership, the Politicisation of Religion, and the Future of Democracy in the Middle East†in November 2006 in Amman.
I am the German girl who discussed with Blu the other night women rights in the Muslim world. Actually I’d luv to participate in this up-coming course but I can’t
But I recommend everybody who has the chance, especially my Arab sisters, go for it! You will meet lots of interesting people from all over the world and you will spend days discussing and exchanging about issues that concern the life of all of us.
As I said in mine’s and Blu’s discussion, the West doesn’t have the right to tell you how to live ya culture, but I am sure this course is a very good opportunity to exchange and get input to develop your ideas of women rights and women culture in 21th century.
