Sri Lankan maid facing execution in Saudi Arabia

July 9th, 2007Esra'a (Bahrain)

Yet another maid faces an execution in the Gulf, this time in Saudi Arabia, for supposed murder. According to the BBC:

The maid, Rizana Nafeek, is accused of killing a baby in her care.

She had originally confessed to killing the four-month-old Saudi baby boy in 2005 but later retracted her statement saying it had been made under duress.

There are more than one million domestic maids working in Saudi Arabia. Rizana Nafeek has one week left in which to appeal against her sentence.

The Hong-Kong based Asian Human Rights Commission said what had happened was an enormous tragedy, but it wanted to prevent an innocent teenager being executed.

In my opinion, death should not be punishible by death. Execution, especially the brutal kind involving hanging or swords, should be outlawed and replaced with life sentences instead. State sanctioned murder is no different than any other kind of murder.

  2. Shame on these Saudis who tolerate the disgusting deeds of their government.
Shame on Islamic countries who accept Saudi terrorism.Shame on the Saudis they are a disgrace to the beloved prophet.

Pray for the safe return of all those innocent maids and workers falsely accused of crime and then executed under false basis.

  3. I’m afraid that’s not the only horror story coming our of Saudi Arabia recently. Remember the girl who was gang raped and sentenced to 90 lashes for being alone with an unrelated male when attacked? She made the mistake of appealing the sentence:

JEDDAH, 15 November 2007 — The General Court in Qatif yesterday doubled the number of lashes for a rape victim as well as jail terms for her assaulters. In its verdict, the court also suspended the victim’s lawyer from defending her.

The Appeals Court sentenced the victim to 200 lashes and six months in prison. The seven rapists had their sentences increased to between two and nine years.
