Um Kulthum
July 9th, 2007
Um Kulthum, a very famous Egyptian, Arab singer who drew the hearts of her audiences, in my opinion, the best singer in Egyptian history.
“Thirty years after her death, Kolthoum still outsells many popular Egyptian artists. Take that, Elvis!” (negrophonic 8).
What do you guys think or know about her?

I like Um Kulthum. I have a collection of her songs on a CD.
She’s got an emotive voice that anyone could relate to. I’ve no idea what she’s saying in her songs, though, but it really doesn’t matter.
She is definitely my idol…a gift to all…nothing like her before or after. She will always remain with us.
I don’t like her! Not an idol!!
Why Josef?
She has a good reputation, and a very good religious attitude since her dad was an Imam!
I know that she loved to wear sunglasses

As for her music, I don’t like it but I don’t hate it either, but she is certainly the most famous Egyptian artist.
‘Her’ hotel in Zamalek, Cairo is a great sheesha-spot
For the big Umm Kalthum lovers, a tricky question, who would you rather listen to? Umm Kalthum or Fayrouz (the Lebanese singer)?
I hear that her glasses were sold for 4 billion riyals… and a Saudi bought it… is this true? I read it a few years ago in the paper.
Its often said that the Middle East is one of the few places on earth in which there is no generational gap between the musical interests of the young and old. Everyone listens to all music young and old, which is mostly true but Um Khalthoum is one of the few that young people dont listen to as much. As opposed to Abdel Halim who everyone loves, no exceptions.
I think Fayrouz is one of the few classical singers that most of the Arab youth I know not only listen to but worship! She’s a very influential figure in our region, I would say more so than Abdel Halim… I guess that depends which countries we’re talking about.
You know, we were young once and we loved listening to Um Kalthoum!

I guess our taste must change with time! But, she is still my idol
She wore sunglasses because she had a goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) that caused her eyes to bulge (exophthalmos). She wanted to hide her bulging eyes, thus she wore dark glasses for cosmetic reasons—they were prescription glasses—she was very near-sited. She used to go to Bethesda Naval hospital for treatment of her condition.
I meant near-sighted.
My toddler heard Om Kulthum for the 1st time a week ago.. He wants to sing like her now.. he’s singing twinkle little stars asking if he sounds like Om Kulthum.. and my answer would be, yes darling you’re even better (little white lies, no disrespect)
Her songs will stay with us.. always
She reminds us of our “youth”, my favorite is Fairooz, but I have to admit I liked all Um Kulthum’s “qusaid”, e.g., Al-Atlal, arak Asai Al damaa,Rubayatt Al khayyam ..etc.Since the state of affairs of Arabs, wal hamdu lilah, has been going from bad to worse for a long time, the further back in time we go, the better things were.
umm koulthoum is a machaAllah very great singer, singing very great songs like gaddedt hobbak leih, enta omry, we daret el-ayyam, el qalb yeashaq kol gameel, and gholobt asaleh fe rohy. She had a voice characterized by the strongest ever in arabic history, and conveying love stories in a way that makes you attached to her singing throughout the song .I myself grew listening to her as well as to muhammad abdel-wahab and abdel-halim hafez.
When was her birthday does anyone know?
