I was planning for this post to be about the election of Petra as one of the new 7 wonders of the world, and how I think that will impact Jordan’s tourism industry and the Jordanian economy. Though, I was just watching the BBC, where they aired an interview with music producer Waseem Mahmoud and two young singers from the group, who emphasised the role of the Muslim community in Britain in fighting and deconstructing terrorism by acting and campaigning, so I thought I would share this with you today, and write about Petra in my next post tomorrow!

Mohammad, just to let you know, the singers are not British, they are actually from Pakistan. The producers (father and sons) are British Muslims though.
In order to start “a jihad against terrorism” is is not to sufficient singing it has nothing to do with you. Moderate muslims should come to terms with the jihad verses in the quran and hadith. Officially denouncing these is the only way the general audience will trust their intentions. Avoiding the issue by doing a mere pr-campaign will not help, terrorists are inspired by the same holy books as moderate muslims.
Terrorists thrive on the attention given to them. People who constantly talk about them are unintentionally feeding their ambitious violent goals. Muslims in the Muslim world have always denounced this type of terrorism; what does the media say about that? Oh yeah, nothing. Interfaith activism and peaceful intentions don’t sell. Violent rage does. So if this campaign did anything, it inspired a generation of young Muslims to stand up against this injustice and say “this is not me, this is not my Islam, and I refuse to subscribe to the extremists’ version of it.”
Thank you Esra’a for your comments on speaking up. We, who have many Muslim friends know that the problem stems from fanaticism and personal unhappiness of those who go to extremes. It is normal for good people not to speak out initially as with the Germans who woke up to late to stop Hitler and others in the world society who do or have done likewise. Here in American we have done the same with the destruction of the Native Americans(years ago), and the injustice against the people of color in our society, an injustice which is still present and damages children of color as well. We are doing better but as long as we who know the consequences of injustice remain silent, the injustice will continue. We must love mankind and see each member of the human family, as our brothers, then we will not be able to tolerate the cruelty of the few! We do not need to endorse the beliefs and views of others. We need to defend the rights of expression and freedom of choice of all women and men so long as those expressions do no harm or injury to anyone else.
Good video and a powerful message. The Pakistani singers have summed up our feelings perfectly – We are not who YOU think we are. The eye of suspicion with which you view us is wrong. They should have added “You need to look in the mirror to look for what you see in us”.
In response to Chelli, I as a Muslim owe no-one an apology for the acts of others who happen to share the same religion as me. Similarly, I do not expect anyone of the Christian faith to apologize for the heinous acts of Adolf Hitler or for white Americans to apologize for the slave trade and racism. Chelli’s comments on Quranic verses relating to Jihad are repugnant and demonstrate both ignorance and a fundamental refusal to accept that people are individuals, have their own interpretations of religious edicts based on their personal situations and understanding.
People of all faiths live in glass houses – there is no exception to this. My feeling has always been that it is better not to throw rocks at each other’s houses – someone with a bigger rock or with more numerous tiny one’s might be home.
Oh but happy1, you DO have something to say. You NEED to say it, because the world’s impression is that YOU SUPPORT TERRORISM.
No one in their right mind thinks Christians supports Hitler. You don’t see masses of Christians celebrating jew deaths. But you see MUSLIMS celebrating terrorist attacks!
i just want to say that yes there are those muslim’s who are going to celebrate terrorism and the death and destructions it has caused in the lives of many people around the world, but then you have to ask yourselves are they really muslims.
if every word in the Qu’ran goes against the murder of hundreds of innocent people, then why go about it.if they were real muslim like they claim to be then surely they would be following the Qu’ran and not make up their own stupid interpretations, right.
basically i just want to say that i think the purpose of this song was put out there and to show the rest of the world that not all muslim support and encourage muslim terrorists and extremists.
