Sexual slavery: Iraqi women’s worst nightmare

July 12th, 2007Esra'a (Bahrain)

Sahar Al Haideri, a Mosul-based reporter who was murdered there last month, reported a recent story that not many journalists dare or care to investigate. In an article entitled “Iraqi sex slaves recount ordeals,” she reveals to us the story of a 17 year old who, like many other young Iraqi girls, has been forced and tricked into prostitution, more accurately referred to as “sexual slavery.”

As Al Haideri reports:

In the volatile northwestern city of Mosul, near the Syrian border, girls and young women from poor and illiterate families are particularly vulnerable to sexual exploitation. Many of those hired as domestic servants end up becoming sex slaves.

Why so hopeless when tricked into this filthy business? Because…

Victims of sexual slavery in Iraq have little support from the police or the courts. Iraqi law only criminalizes the sexual exploitation of children.

Many women are tricked into sex slavery in Iraq with the promise of a new life in the Gulf.

I hope that Sahar will rest in peace. She has contributed so much to journalism and has made us aware of the region’s most important incidents. Her courage will forever be admired. This also goes to Zakia Zaki and Sanga Amach, both of whom were media reporters who got murdered in Kabul. They are an inspiration to all of us young activists who wish to take part in a difference within the troubled region.
