Follow up on Egypt Ad…”The Mona Video”
August 25th, 2007Thank you Esra’a for not letting this issue be far from the subject. This post is actually a comment on the other post but since I wanted to post a video I had to write a new post.
Mona was 16 when she was executed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. There is a full length documentary/movie being created about her short life. This video was done in the 80s but is still very popular. The mullah who writes approves her execution is the guy who gets shot in the eye in Godfather, also a Baha’i actor.

You can read more about her here.

Omid T,
I found it strange that the link you give that tells the story of Mona makes no mention of the Iran-Iraq war, which resulted in the deaths of at least a million Iranians. For those not familiar with the war see

How did the war affect the Bahais? In time of war all peoples’ civil liberties are affected. Were there Muslims who were persecuted by the governmnet? Shouldn’t their suffering be acknowledged as well?
A very good question.
Many Iranian Baha’is were indeed killed in the war and many still today serve in the Iranian military as part of the national requirement. I plan to work on a podcast very soon with some Baha’is in my community detailing their experiences and time doing some of the most nasty and treacherous jobs.
During that war I imagine that Sunni Muslims in Iran had a tough time. Ayatollah rallied the Iranian shia’a against Saddam based on the fact that this his government was Arab Sunni. As im sure you know, many Iraqi Shi’a fought in the war against their spiritual brothers in Iran. Many also were suspected of sedition and spying by Saddam as well. You can imagine what happened to them. I guess because the two countries at the time were headed by dramatically diffent people, Saddam and Khomeini, they used the only differences they could find to divide the people and fight each other. Arab vs Persian.
Regarding the Iranian Baha’is and their civil liberties during war. I don’t see why a group of women would be executed for simply believing in their Faith. That evil was done because of hatred, not national security. Needless to say they have very little civil liberties today, let alone ever.
