The FBI Is Coming For Me
Well not yet but soon I think.
Now that the U.S. is tapping domestic phone calls people need to watch what they say, not because they have anything to hide but because in the course of an innocent conversation you can draw a lot of unwanted attention.
Not many people understand how domestic wire tapping works, its not like the movies, no one is sitting outside your house in a pizza delivery truck. Actually there are a series of “buzz” words that set off recording equipment and alert the agency to your conversation and identity. I remember reading a story in the newspaper about a 35 year old housewife who was investigated after her phone call set off the tapes. Believe it or not all it takes is “bomb”. This poor lady was on the phone with her sister talking about her son’s little league baseball game and how he “hit a bomb” outside the park. Apparently the equipment misunderstood and thought she said, “hid a bomb”. I guess the context wasnt really important.
Keeping that in mind I’m positive that my phone call was taped the other day. Here are a list of buzz words and phrases that found their way in to my conversation.
-Egypt
-Mubarak
-Muslim Brotherhood
-Mosque
-Ramadan
-Iran
-Ahmadinejad
-Hezbollah
-Jihad of all Jihad’s
and my favorite
-Mo is gonna blow himself up.
At that point me and my friend realized even though our conversation was innocent, this string of terms followed by “blow up” has certainly caused our phone to be tapped. We paused, got nervous, mumbled some nervous gibberish and hung up the phone.
If I disappear for any extended period of time just assume I’ve been kidnapped by the CIA and sent to a secret prison in the Middle East.

Paranoia and conspiracy minded people are thick in the Middle East. Frankly, having friends who have worked with the NSA and counter-terrorism centers, there is actually a lot more police work done in the process. They just don’t abduct people who have weird conversations. First of all, they are actively tracking known threats that are dangerous according to witnesses, profiles and other behaviors. Sleeper cells are what they are tracking.
They would have to hire 50,000 more people to analyze and dismiss all the calls that contain those similar keywords. You have to remember that organizations like the CIA are bureaucracies just as much as they are spy companies. They have budgets, priorities, goals, and often have to choose the bigger of two fish, and often the lesser of two evils.
The question is, are you a big fish? =-)
I think a great deal of the ‘paranoia’ is justified and I think people like to dismiss real threats by labelling them ‘conspiracies’.
I find the invasion of our liberties extremely worrying.
