Featured artist: R.D. Tolouee from Iran

September 30th, 2007Esra'a (Bahrain)

R.D. Tolouee is a 31 year old artist/painter in Tehran. She teaches in the sculpture department of Tehran Art University.

I contacted her asking if we can profile her and add some of her work, and she fortunately agreed.

Below you will find samples of her latest works. She describes that “they’re narrative art with religious/historical bias. The religious side is mainly taken from Judaism, Shia sect (writings and concept of funeral poems on the background of works) and some vague Christian elements.” In narrative art (an artistic movement after 60s and 70s which differs from illustrating books) the artist applies the personal/social/cultural issues using them all in a visual narration. So they can contain dreams and hopes, nightmares and fears, past and interests of the artist. Some parts of this series are related with Islamic themes mixed with Persian customs. Some others are about pre-Islamic concepts of Iran (Anahita… the feminine side of G-d and sign of wisdom and waters in Mythraism religion) and some others refer to the social life in Persia as a culture which, in her opinion, “is getting damaged now mainly due extremist influences”.

Her motto is:

“The most forbidden is the most interesting.”

Here are her works:

Pieta under the Persian Wedding Canopy

Persian Family in the Jail-House

Anahita

Nightmare

The First Friday Night

The Lost Persian Princess

Asia

The Stupid Dumb

  1. Wow. Her work is magnificent. Very strong and meaningful. As for the artist herself, well she is just stunning! Excellent pick.

  2. This artist’s motto is really interesting and pretty much extremely true. That makes her work even more interesting to look at.

Seriously Ms. Tolouee, your work is exquisite. Like I’d it’s that deep kind of art where you have to stare at it to find out what it’s about. It’s that kind of art where you could get lost just looking at it. I love that.

I particularly LOVE the last one. I wonder what it feels like to look at it in actual real life. Pretty awesome, I bet.

Anyway, you’re really talented. Keep it up!

  3. I cannot stop looking at “Nightmare”

I would kill to have the original version in my room.
Someday, when I get a big load of cash, I’ll come over to Iran and buy it from you. Haha.

  5. It’s exclusive stuff guys! Currently nowhere else on the internet, even though she deserves her own gallery site. Glad we sought her out! There are too many talents that go unnoticed, under-appreciated, underrated, etc.

  19. Wow, never thought I’d see her own pictures here. She’s really brave to do that. I would do it too because her work is too powerful to be ignored. The last one just reminds me of everything….all of the big soupy bowl of chicken soup that is Iran…for the most part.

Does she have a gallery or a private email we can correspond with her?
