Featured artist: R.D. Tolouee from Iran

by

R.D. Tolouee is a 31 year old artist/painter in Tehran. She teaches in the sculpture department of Tehran Art University.

I contacted her asking if we can profile her and add some of her work, and she fortunately agreed.

Below you will find samples of her latest works. She describes that “they’re narrative art with religious/historical bias. The religious side is mainly taken from Judaism, Shia sect (writings and concept of funeral poems on the background of works) and some vague Christian elements.” In narrative art (an artistic movement after 60s and 70s which differs from illustrating books) the artist applies the personal/social/cultural issues using them all in a visual narration. So they can contain dreams and hopes, nightmares and fears, past and interests of the artist. Some parts of this series are related with Islamic themes mixed with Persian customs. Some others are about pre-Islamic concepts of Iran (Anahita… the feminine side of G-d and sign of wisdom and waters in Mythraism religion) and some others refer to the social life in Persia as a culture which, in her opinion, “is getting damaged now mainly due extremist influences”.

Her motto is:

“The most forbidden is the most interesting.”

Here are her works:

Pieta under the Persian Wedding Canopy

Persian Family in the Jail-House

Anahita

The First Friday Night

The Lost Persian Princess
