Sabra-Shatilla mother reunited with daughter she thought was killed: YouTube video-Is it real?
October 15th, 2007There is a link to a YouTube video of a woman who was a survivor of the Sabra and Shatilla Massacres in Lebanon in 1982. The woman’s name is ostensibly “Rehab Kanan.” She is described as a Palestinian Poet, although I have not heard of her — I assume she only writes in Arabic. She was supposedly interviewed on Abu Dhabi Television. People in Lebanon saw the interview, according to the story, and realized that her daughter had not died and was in fact still alive. The massacres obviously caused great confusion in the lives of many people, as well as much death. Is the video real?
I would like to know:
Here’s the link and the text that came with it:
I recently received this and just had to share it with you all. Here’s the English description of the video in Arabic on YouTube:
Rehab Kanan is a Palestinian poet who left Lebanon after the Sabra and Shatila Massacare in 1982, knowing that her husband and daughter had died under the rubble of their house. She kept writing poems all these years. Once Abu Dabi TV had an interview with her. People in Lebanon saw the interview, and they knew that her daughter was found alive. So they contacted the TV station who agreed to have another interview with her, this time bringing her daughter to her without her knowledge. Look at this meeting, you cannot hold your tears back.
May God bless your kids and keep them safe under your wings.

What I didn’t like about the video was that they took the power of an allegedly good story (a mother who thinks her daughter has been dead all these years only to discover that she is alive). That is a GREAT STORY. But why is it that we have to take the power of a great story and then add to the image a lot of other videos of the conflict that are clearly intended to make the Israelis look bad? I understand how activists use images and messages to strengthen a story, but when a story does not need to be strengthened, are you really helping it by padding the video with other images of political conflict?
If this video is true, it would have made a great news story. Instead, it is being used to make a lousy partisan political message intended to attack Israel. I don’t think it is right. I don’t think it is strategic.
Maybe someone who speaks Arabic can listen and offer an interpretation that might make sense of this. I’d be interested.
Thanks

This is a true story that was broadcasted and published in many places. Also, it is not so unusual for this to have happened after what the terrorist militia (who claimed to be Christians!!) backed by the Zionist army did.
Why would you not believe it is a true story? Many Arab-Christians even deny that the Maronites had no part of the Sabra and Shatila massacre. Mr. Hanania, if you are an Arab-Christian, you are denying this happened out of some passive GUILT. AND no this is not a political strategy, it is the truth. Israel has commited many crimes and is still occupying illegal territories.
