Peacemaker’s Camp – near San Francisco
October 16th, 2007I was just thinking the other day how funny my trip began when I noticed how Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv put three airlines on the floor just below the main floor. They were Lot Airways (Poland), Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa. Coincidence or not? Putting these airways in the basement – was this not Israel’s official airport revenge for World War II atrocities?
But getting back to camp, all I know is that I was so friggin’ cold that first day of Camp Towanga, high in the Sierra mountains, over three hours from San Francisco, that I wanted to go back to Jerusalem – immediately!! It was raining savagely and I guess God did it on purpose so that we’d all huddle together - us 90 Palestinians and Jews – over the fireplace in the dining area/lounge. As I tried to defrost over a pizza lunch, there were 20 minute instructions on how to deal with your cutlery, plates and meal time organization that I looked over at my friend Aliza and asked “Why do I feel like I’m in rehab?”. There were more warnings about how to deal with snakes and black bears if we should see any. I zoned out after 10 minutes of instructions and looked around. Most of the campers were half my age and there were a few smatterings of “elderly” campers – over the age of 45. It was good to be “senior” as we fab five got the bunk with the bathroom inside. I ventured out on the porch only once because of the darbuka playing outside. The musicians had already found each other and musician lovers like myself were happy at the spontaneous jam. And man (it’s so California to say “man”), was I glad I bought that Monterey sweatshirt with a hood at that kitschy tourist shop in Monterey.
That evening, back at the bunk, any part of my body that was out of my sleeping bag was painfully cold – like my fingers and my nose. As a result, I woke up at dawn and was one of the 5 who decided to go on a morning walk on top of the mountain ridge. Fortunately, these people weren’t the young ‘uns, and I had a good conversation with our group, one an English teacher who lives in the Bay area, who, though she is in between cancer treatments, was able to walk way ahead of me without huffing and puffing and a wonderful Palestinian American whose cousin owns the beautiful and quaint Jerusalem Hotel in East Jerusalem. I was quite pleased at myself for getting good at playing “Arab Geography.” We hardly noticed the vistas as we were so engrossed in our conversations but I did notice the sun coming up finally warming my cold bones.
The camp looked lovely that day, and it was set amidst large acorn trees which would drop acorns on our heads if we sat under one. There were workshops on Compassionate Listening, lots of organized group talk, hikes to the waterfalls, shorter hiking to the river, boating on the lake, analogous games were played, like trying to steal each other’s treasure and in the end we found the treasure was the same, which brought out 2 1/2 hour discussions on borders and the conflict and the feelings each of us felt about it. I could hear heated discussions coming from other circles and it was good to be able to hear what everyone had to say. During our workshop on how to effect Change someone mentioned the book the “Tipping Point” that 20% of people are waiting to see if a product/something will work and then will join in if they see that it does. And then it grows from there. So we have to market our peace efforts so that we reach out to those not yet involved, which will happen naturally if they see successes in our grass roots endeavors. I’m not so much worried about that as I see it will kick off eventually.
There were a few Palestinians whose stories I heard, for example, one was from a refugee camp in Jericho. He thought he was going to a convention, not a camp. It would be difficult for him to say to friends that he “partied with Israelis” because others in his refugee camp are not into “normalization processes with Israelis” – at least not yet. I mentioned other Palestinians I knew who were at the All Nations Cafe meetings from the Dehaisha and Anata refugee camps, and thought he’d be ok there.
Later on that morning about 5 of us stood up in front of the entire camp to tell our transformation stories. Another was a woman who spoke about her husband and brother who had been killed by the IDF, after her brother-in-law was killed by a stray IDF missile on his way to his wedding to her sister. So in revenge she recruited her brother and husband for attacks against the IDF and she herself was in prison for 2 years leaving 3 very young children with her mother. She decided that fighting against Israelis isn’t the answer but joining a grassroots peace movement is – so she is now part of Combatants for Peace. I heard the story of a young man from Gaza whose home was destroyed by the IDF and he wanted to strap on a belt of explosives in revenge, but thinking about it decided that he’d cause more damage than good to his people and is now part of the Arava Institute in the Negev. I spoke about my own transformation from being a member of Rabbi Kahane’s Kach party in the 80’s and partying with them in Jerusalem, but the hate was eventually so uncomfortable for me that I had no community for a while until I found myself so heavily involved in the interfaith dialogue movement in Jerusalem as The Answer to the conflict and became a missionary for peace.
In the evening, the mood was lighter and on Saturday night and Sunday night there was dancing for three hours while the DJ’s spun American, Israeli and Arabic dance music. My rather conservative American-Palestinian bunkmate from Tulkarem thought the Arab girls wouldn’t dance but most of the Palestinian girls did get up to boogie and could put me to shame in the belly dance department. I loaned my three belly dance belts to a group of young Palestinian women, two of which returned my belts on the day we left and one didn’t return it. And that was my favorite belt – the velvet one my friend bought me from Turkey. And I was thinking she was probably thinking (with ‘attitude’) “you know, this bitch stole my land, and so I’m gonna steal her belly dance belt.” OK, but I think I’ve got the better deal.
The last day, we walked down to the river to wash each other’s hands as a cleansing ritual – generally those that touched our souls we asked if we could wash their hands – and we blessed each other as we did it.
The last morning of the camp I had a lively conversation with a Palestinian from Jerusalem who made my day by talking about how Sephardic Jews should call themselves Arabs and then there would be no problem getting into the Arab League as the Arabs would then have a mindswitch, as Israel would be considered “mostly Arab.” I laughed and told them the city I live in, Maaleh Adumim, is then 80% Arab – Jewish Arab. “See? No problems then” laughed my friend. And I teased him about being a Zionist. I told him “King David (I think) coined the term Zion in his Psalms. Therefore, the land is called Zion from ancient times, it’s not a modern term. So anyone who loves the Land of Zion, even if he’s an Arab, is a Zionist!” And we laughed at each other hysterically because our suggestions are absurd and true at the same time.
In the closing session, we were amused to hear a Palestinian quote Herzl (he explained that he quoted Herzl because he had such a good track record) saying “If you have the will it is not a dream.” And let us say “Amen”.

The reason why those airlines are downstairs is that they compile a large amount of outgoing traffic from the airport and are all part of the Star Alliance. There is simply not enough space for them upstairs.
yeah – but it seems funny that it’s “those” airlines – German/Austrian/Polish. It could have been Czech airlines, or Turkish airlines or Kazakstan or the British but it is ironic – non?
Muslim Hindu Christian Jewish Peace Plan

The desire to bring peace to the world is most likely the inner
mood of most of us today. To-do that we need to come to a
common understanding of religious terminology and beliefs.
For example most of us have no idea that the name Allah comes
from the Hebrew letter Alef, our A, in the English alphabet.
This simple point contains enough information for every
Christian, Jew and Hindu to accept Allah as a name of God.
I will explain further, in the “Old Testament” which Jewish
people call the 5 books of Moses, God explains that He is the
beginning to the end. This same idea is expressed in the New
Testament. Revelation 22:13, I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. This
English usage of Alpha is based on the Hebrew Alef. Also in
the Hindu (Vedic) scripture, Bagavad Gita, Krishna says “of
letters I am A.”
Has God sent so many messengers each with a different
message? Is He sitting in the Garden of Eden laughing at us?
I think not! We have twisted His message based on our own
material desire, creating our own Hell on Earth.
The objection we find from our Muslim brothers today comes
from the desire to bring the world back to God and His ways.
We find this mood in our Jewish-Christian tradition also.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of
knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
This lack of discipline, this foolish rush of insane
materialism is what every deeply religious person objects to,
no matter which faith he or she is coming from. We can take
good example from our Amish brothers and Hindu (Vedic) sages.
An error of modern society and religion is to identify the
body as the self. The Bhagavad-Gita clearly explains that we
should see and accept the spiritual essence (the soul) of
each living being as spiritually equal. There it is said,
“The humble sage, by virtue of true knowledge, sees with
equal vision a learned and gentle Brahman, a cow, an
elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcast].”
[Bagavad Gita 5.18]
How does the learned sage see every living entity with equal
vision? He sees the spirit soul within the heart of each of
God’s creations. He understands that although living forms
may appear different, those appearances are only the external
coverings of the soul, and that spiritually we are all equal.
A careful analysis shows that all problems result from our
first mistake of identifying the body as the self. If we
identify ourselves by race, religion and ethnic group we will
then suffer or enjoy the results of that identity, but the
fact is we are spiritually equal and the bodily identity that
we accept is both temporary and insignificant compared to our
eternal spiritual identity. We suffer due to birth, disease,
old age and death; we need not identify with the body, which
is being afflicted by these difficulties.
If everyone understood and acted on the level of the soul
rather than the body, the world’s problems would practically
cease. Understanding the difference between matter and
spirit, and that God is the controller of all things, is the
essence of knowledge.
It is natural that when we become overwhelmed by
difficulties, we become aware of our dependence on God.
Unfortunately, due to our deep attachment to materialism, we
are drawn to perceive religion in much the same manner, as we
perceive ordinary social activities. That is, we become
attached to identifying with the external or social side of
religion, while we forget its essence-loving service to God.
Our modern use of the word religion, expresses an external
alterable faith, while the Sanskrit word dharma, implies an
internal or essential eternal relationship with God. Our
religion or faith can change but the soul’s relationship with
God is eternal. For example, I may claim that I am a
Christian today, but I may adopt the practices of a Hindu or
of a Jew tomorrow. However, whatever faith you my follow, the
essence of that faith is loving service to God.
We must understand that our Muslim brothers and sisters who
have come to understand the true message of Allah accept all
of us as children of God based on this verse from the Koran.
2.62: Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and
the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in Allah
and the Last day and does good, they shall have their reward
from their Lord, and there is no fear for them, nor shall
they grieve.
We should also understand that as a nation, nay as a human
race if we do not come to follow God’s laws and develop our
love for Him and His creation, our future is all too clear.
For Our Lord says: Isaiah 46: I make known the end from the
beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say:
My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.

That sounds like a great time! (As a proud all season campin Canadian {luv that -30C snowdrift tentin baby!} I gently mock your wilderness prowess) There is nothing better than a few days or weeks out in the wilderness to wipe away the stresses and anxieties that living amongst the crowds of our fellow humans gives us. I have yet to see a church, mosque or temple that rivals the beauty of a sunset or sunrise out in the wild. It’s too bad that more and more people have never experienced this, but have only seen cities and urban landscapes. Two years ago I sponsored a liver surgeon fron China to come study techniques here for a year; the last part of his stay was in the summer, so we agreed that his wife and daughter could come visit for the last month of his stay. I drove them down to see Niagara Falls, and took them for a nice day hike along the Niagara Escartment (a long ridge and nature preserve). About an hour in, I noticed my friends wife was crying, so I asked if something was wrong. He replied that everything was fine, she was very happy, it was just the first time she had been in a forest!
yeah Eric, I remember looking up at the sky at camp and seeing the stars and the Milky Way so clearly. It was just gorgeous, but I got a neck ache for a few days afterwards because I was looking up so much!!
