MEY TV – Mideast Youth extending to videos

For a few weeks now, we have been working on something that we never publicly announced: A video feature.

Here on the site, we believe in much more than just blogging. We have made it clear by now that we are no longer a mere blog, since we provide petitions, free hosting to others, gallery, podcasts, campaigns, forums, and now most recently a video service that we hope will help change the face and performance of the Middle Eastern cyberspace.

Next week, we will have completed this feature. With YouTube being increasingly moderated, which led to our videos being spontaneously removed with no explanation (certainly not copyright), we felt that it’s important for us to have our space, run entirely by MEY staff members and volunteers who wish to get involved. Censorship is not our thing. We will enable users to submit their own videos which will generate an embedding code for them to place on their websites/blogs, as long as they are not libelous, racist/hateful, and not in violation of copyright.

Videos are wonderful. They are fast, inspirational, powerful, and cool. We work hard on them. When the blogosphere bores me, I watch videos of like-minded activists or film makers and it’s what inspires me to keep it up. Words are great, but for the most part they are not as effective. They are not as real. Videos can make you run an extra mile with your imagination. You can make other people curious enough to look up certain human rights abuses or make them realize that they have the power to do something about it.

Which is really how the idea of MEY TV was born. Podcasting and words aren’t enough, there is still a major gap and introducing videos will really help fill it in. For MEY to succeed we need it to be much more than a blog, we want it to be a significant source of information that is representative of who we really are.

I hope you guys will find this feature useful, that you will put it to good use so we can exchange great stories and ideas through it. We are very excited to be announcing this feature next week. I thought I’d give you a head’s up, so some of you can suggest what you wanna see in these videos and whether it’s a useful feature for MEY to have.
