What did you want to be when you were a child?
This post is a part of a Zuender series. Some of you are already aware that we are collaborating with this great German e-Zine, where German readers can get an insight on how young Middle Easterners live, feel, and think. It’s a great cultural experience, and we are honored to work with them!
This week, this is the question that they pose to us:

When we were young, everything was different. We had dreams of becoming train conductors, princesses or veterinarians. Now we are grown up (kind of) and work as journalists and smile when we think about our childhood dreams.
We would like to ask you: “What did you want to become in the future, when you were little? Why? And what has become of it?”
The answers in this post will be translated for the e-Zine, so please state your first name and country.

I read this website hoping to find more laid back posts like these that I can relate to as an apolitical and areligious person. Now I can finally find something I’m comfortable enough commenting on!
When I was young I wanted to be a pilot. I continue to have an abnormal fascination with planes and I think jet pilots are sexy. I have a collection of over 200 little planes from when I was in elementary school. I work in public relations now.
It pays well. I won’t complain. I cannot help but wonder though how my life would be if I were a pilot!

I went through phases, obviously… I wanted to be a fashion designer, a veterinarian. But when it started to become ‘real’ in my teenage years, I wanted to be a psychologist. Then I wanted to go into politics. Then a journalist. More psychology… And what am I doing now? Studying mediation and conflict management. I think it makes sense; I think it was always there and this is how it’s manifesting itself… Besides, it was too expensive to study psychology! But conflict management is doing just fine.
(By the way, I agree with you, Amal, the first line of your comment…)
I wanted to be a stand-up comedian. But then something horrible happened when I graduated from the 5th grade. I lost my sense of humor!
Then I wanted to be a prison manager, so that I can help innocent and political prisoners escape. Obviously, I had no chance in that department, so in my early teens I wanted to be a crime reporter. But that freaked me out after some research.
So I’m waiting until I’m done with college in May so that I can join the rest of my countrymen in the glorious days of stressful unemployment. I still have no idea what I’m going to do with my life, and to be honest, I don’t really care, as long as I get to practice my passion.
I wanted to be a model, if I continued I would have went against my family’s will so I was forced to pick another profession to work on.
I’m studying to be an engineer now, and I have an obsession for shoes! (because at some point I also wanted to be a shoe/leg model.)
Before:
I guess I have to share the very common kid dream and say “astronaut!”
After:
I studied hard for two years to get into medical school and gave it up for sports journalism. Then I gave that up a year ago. Now applying back to medical school.
Cool thread! Keep them coming guys.
Well, I’ve always loved math and physics, so I guess it was inevitable that I was going to study something related,I hold a degree in electrical engineering, and I currently work as an electronic security engineer , though I’m working on developing my skills in directing and film-making, and I would like to pursue my graduate studies in business adminstration.
And Esra’a, knowing you, I really don’t think you’ll find a hard time getting a job:-)
I wanted to be a sci-fi writer and comic artist. Today, I’m an accountant.
I am studying to be a lawyer. But I really love teaching. When I was younger I wanted to be a cop. I too love planes. I would love to be a pilot taxing people from island to island in the south pacific or carribean…ya man.
Let’s see…
At the age of 7, I wanted to be a queen. So my mom told me to do my homework and I’ll be a queen, little did I know, I did all my homework in hopes to become a queen. After that, I wanted to go to the moon. She said if I studied my math I will.. but I’m still here! Next phase was at the age of 15, that’s when I wanted to be an interior decorator… I gave up on that for silly reasons, but the phase is gone.
Now.. I just want to be a rock star.
Lets see…..as a child, I was more of a boy then i was a girl since I’m in the youngest child and the only girl after 3 sons …so I wanted to join the army….Gradually, as I started growing into my own real gender…I became very interested in Egyptology. Cant; remember what made me change my mind, but i developed an infatuation with media afterwards…and i wanted to be a TV hostess…which then changed into journalism….and thats what am doing now
Well, there is something I’d like to add and that’s I’m also fond of Sci-fi , I grew up loving Star wars and Star Trek,at a really young age the idea of becoming a galactic traveller would come to my mind!
Anyhow, I’m watching a new series called ‘Heroes’ these days, and it all revolves around the theory of human evolution and possessing extraordinary abilities , like telekinesis and such…
I would absolutely love it if I could move things just by merely thinking about it:-)

I wanted to be a firefighter, that sounded very heroic, exciting and honorable. Then I grew out of it, felt like being a dancer, then a vet, a vet would see animals dying, so that was out of question. I am a graduate student of teaching and I take care of my little daighters.
I understand my response is rather late, but by the time I was 8 my dream was to become the first female UN secretary-general
