Ali Shafeya, “Alive in Baghdad” correspondent, was recently killed

December 15th, 2007Esra'a (Bahrain)

The Committee to Protect Bloggers just published a post noting the following horrible news:

Ali Shafeya, a correspondent with Alive in Baghdad, was killed yesterday in Habibya. Ali’s father and brother have both died, leaving only his mother and sister. Brian Conley, the editor of Alive in Baghdad, is collecting donations for his funeral and to help his remaining family. You can send yours via PayPal to smallworldnews@gmail.com or visit the Alive in Baghdad site. Either way, indicate that your donation is for Ali.

If you’re unfamiliar with AiB, it is an on-the-ground news gathering service, built up with native Iraqi journalists. They cover things foreign journalists can’t or won’t. They are, in spirit, bloggers. Ali was one of ours. Let’s take care of his family.

As of 10:00 a.m. (PST) they have raised $600. One of the best ways to keep track of what’s going on is Brian’s Twitter account.

The AIB blog notes:

The morgue report says that Ali took 31 bullets between the chest and the head and died immediately. He will be missed and remembered. His two brothers were killed in the Firdos Square bombing in 2005. He is survived by his mother and sister. As written above, we are collecting donations for his family via Paypal and mail at smallworldnews (at) gmail.com No amount is too small, and anything will be appreciated.

Please visit the site and see how you can help.

  1. This is so very, very sad. Not quite 23 years old and shot in his own home. Actually, “murdered” would be a better word.

  2. This is terrible. I am subscribed to Alive in Baghdad and have been watching it for the last 6 months. I will pray for him and his family.
