Some 'notes' on Mideast music tastes…
If there is one thing in this world that is universal, it is certainly the power of music on the human race. It’s time to get down to our musical roots and answer this week’s featured questions from our friends at Zuender magazine:
What was the first album that you bought or that really impressed you?
Where did you buy it or listen to it?

1) The first single I ever bought was Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us.” It was a cassette, at the time anyone who had CDs drove a BMW and was considered too hip to even be looked at.
2) I begged my mom to take me to the nearest music store on a crowded Thursday evening when she was grocery shopping. I was a brat and refused to enter the car without her promising that she’d take me to the store so I can buy a Michael Jackson single and fit in with the rest of the cool ones at school.
I didn’t know any of his songs, I only knew his name, the fact that he looked like a scary old lady, and that everyone listened to him. So, I ran into a music store and said “1 Mr. Jackson, please!”and I felt so cool after started listening to it.
I actually still have that cassette.
I should add that I won an award in the 5th grade carnival for mastering the best Michael Jackson impersonation.
1- 18 till i die – Bryan Adams
2- i don’t remember where i bought it from – used to listen to it at home and in the car
1) Abadi Al-Jowhar … he’s a traditional and very talented Arab performer. Though I can no longer stand the sound of his voice or his depressing music.
2) I bought it from a little music store that no longer exists, it has ironically been replaced with a McDonald’s.
The first English album I got was “Reload” by Metallica.

Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix… all were very accessible in Dubai, although all the tapes were pirated (but sold in proper music shops) and only cost 8 dhs.. the equivalent of about 75 pense!! Those were the good old days!!!
Esra’a, for curiosity’s sake; on which hand did you wear your “white glove” for your Mickey Jackson impersonation? Do you know the hidden significance of a “white glove” in private schools? Your comment was very amusing to me. Thank you!

my first album was heroes by david bowie. it was a pressie from my sis and friends, which they all signed on the inside cover. what was special about the album was that david sang two or three lines in (miserable but very sexy) german. it was a gift before i had to go in hospital for a risky operation. life was not the same after having heard david and having ‘survived’ the operation.
