It is refreshing that a secular Iranian did not engage in too much nostalgic waxing (or historica revisionism), such as noting that shah's sister who headed up the monarchist Organization of Iranian Women was Ashraf Pahlavi, "a woman with a bad reputation"

Well, this seems to be a step backwards:

Tehran, 28 Jan. (AKI) - Iran's most important women's magazine, Zanan, (Women) has been forced to close after 16 years of publication, after being accused of painting a "dark picture" of Iran.

Spanky: How exactly is giving women same rights as men equal to creating a thousand porn stars every year? if that is how you see women then I feel sorry for you. Those "Irani cuties" which you admire like a pervert, are humans too. They should have the right to choose whether to wear a hijab or not, and they should not do it for the sake of your viewing pleasure, but because they choose to. You sick bastard.

First, I firmly believe that any kind of social issue such as abortion, contraception, dress codes, etc. that pertain pretty much exclusively to women should be addressed exclusively by women. A man has no business telling a women what to do with her body, how to dress, or what right he has to touch her. Quite frankly, given the current record of male dominated governments and societies around the world, it's pretty apparent that most of us guys should make as few decisions as possible (mostly confined to sports and car repair).
Men telling women that they need to be controlled for their own good is pretty much like George Bushes latest creation of a government programme to counsel folks about their bad credit spending habits! HYPOTWIT!

One of the issues here is whether the empowerment of women is stricly a Western value, or is it instead a universal value, to be adopted by the whole of mankind, regardless of cultural mores?

If it is simply Western, traditional societies can reject it as another example of Western corruption.

If, on the other hand, it is a universal value, as I think it is, then it becomes incumbent on even the most misogynistic societies to pay attention when women begin demaning their rights.

I think that it was no less than the Prophet Muhammad himself who saw that empowering women was a universal value. He married a woman 15 years older that him, who was very wealthy, and who ran several thriving businesses. It was she who proposed marriage to him, and who finananced the founding of the new religion. And in his teachings, Muhammad advocated on behalf of women's rights, and on behalf as women as full partners. When he died, the tribal customs of the day, including treating women like property, took over and became integrated into religious teachings, against his intent.

If you keep women down, you marginalize their moderating influence, and you enable the extremism of the day to run rampant.
The inclination of women toward peace should be allowed to become part and parcel of the political landscape of the Middle East and the Muslim world.

on the left we have Mr Jahanshah Rashidian with the blue boxers, secular, faithless and believe in creating a change in Iran which would create a thousand Aylar Lie per year

and on the right wearing the red boxer we have Ayatollah Khomeini, the man who have some really strict views about women.

who will win.....i don't give a damn

i believe that the role model which should prevail is the role model of those Irani Hijabi cuties i see in Iranian movies (yes, Iran have a hell of great cinema industry).....no Niqab, no mini skirts....no Khomeini no Rashidian......no Faqeeh rule, no corrupt secular elite rule....the middle road
