Skype conference with American high school students

Author: Esra'a (Bahrain) - February 25, 2008

Sometime this week (or early next week) a few of us are going to be joining several high school students from Pennsylvania in a Skype conference. It will be moderated by their teacher, and it’s to help with their global studies class, so think of it as a cultural exchange as well as an educational experience for all of us.

Is there anyone in the Middle East who would like to join us? Last time I was the only one doing it, because MEY at the time was primarily populated by people who were blogging anonymously. Now that some of you are blogging under your real names I hope you consider joining us in this exchange. If so I will e-mail you the details as we have yet to decide on a time and date (which will be difficult considering the time difference.) The subject is very general and anyone in the region is welcome to join.

This session will be recorded and an edited version will be published as a podcast here.

This is a very effective way at improving cultural relations and communication between Middle Eastern and American youth. I hope some of you will be fascinated enough to call in! If interested, all you would need is a Skype account (and you can download Skype here) as well as a mic. This could take anything from 30 minutes to an hour depending on Mr. Wimmer who will be inviting his students.

  • And again I feel sorry for my for not being in the Middle East ;-)

Sounds like an interesting project, as it makes up a great opportunity for cultural exchange and communication where it is really needed. Hope you’ll have a fine hour, Esra’a!

  • Does it only have to be people in the region??

I want to let everyone know that my students are extremely excited for the conference tomorrow. If you have doubts about joining the discussion, I implore you to join in to help break many of preconceived ideas my students have about the Middle East. The more diversity the better! Also, I want to thank Esra’a and everyone that is going to join the conversation for their time and effort in this venture!

I am one of the students who you will be talking to and I just want to say that what you are doing to promote human unity and equality is inspiring because you are one of the few people walking the walk and not talking the talk. I look forward to talking with you tomorrow.

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned here before, because I am new to this blog, but I wonder if you and/or Mr. Wimmer know about an organization called Soliya. Their website is http://www.soliya.net and actually their whole program pretty much revolves around skype conferences (based on skype, they have their own custom software which is pretty awesome)between college students in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East (though they’ll be expanding soon to South Asia). They are full of resources (just troll around their website for a while, or send an email to one of the contact persons), and if you are interested in facilitated conversations between youth I think it’s something really wonderful to check out. They’d probably also like to know about exchanges between high school students…
