MidEast Youth and I Go Back To School

Generally I enjoy 12 to 13 hours of sleep a night, I like to believe I can’t function without it. Regardless of how much sleep I get, I can’t stand waking up early when the birds are chirping and the sun has just come up, I like to wake up just in time to celebrate the night, you know what I’m saying? Today I made an exception though, Esra’a and I did a conference call on Skype with Mr. Wimmer’s Global Studies class at Central York High School in Pennsylvania. Mr. Wimmer initiated the conference and asked if we could answer some questions about the Middle East for his class. So against the advice of my biological clock, I woke up this morning at 6:50 A.M. so I’d be ready for our call at 7:30 A.M. which ironically is probably the earliest I’ve woken up since I was in High School myself.

Promptly at 7:30 we started the call, made our introductions and the questions began. I have to be honest I expected at least a few of the questions that have haunted my adult life, such as, “Do you live in a pyramid?”, “Do you guys have, like, buildings and stuff?” But there was none of that, thank God, I have to applaud Mr. Wimmer’s class for asking appropriate and well thought out questions crafted to give the class a better understanding of the Middle East’s social and political atmosphere. Questions were about race, politics, bigotry, nationalism, materialism and a few other ‘ism’s. Everything was recorded and Esra’a will be posting it sometime in the near future, it will be featured both on Whisper of Madess.com and Mideast Youth.com

All and all it was a great experience for everyone involved and I look forward to following up with the class after they finish their section on the Middle East. I’d like to thank Mr. Wimmer for creating this forum, its a fantastic idea on your part and I would love to see more teachers using technology to bring the world into their classroom. To Mr. Wimmer’s class, thank you for your great questions, I can’t wait to speak to you all again after you make the progression through this section.
