Mideast Peace Song - “In My Heart”

Author: Alice (Israel) - March 8, 2008

This is one of several “peace songs” produced by Search for Common Ground/Common Ground productions. “In My Heart” is also the theme song from The Shape of the Future, a SFCG-produced documentary film about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. David Broza and Said Murad (two well-known Israeli and Palestinian musicians) wrote the song; it was performed by David Broza and Wisam Murad.

I found it per accident a few month ago on YouTube and fell in love with it… I’ve been listening to it for weeks in a row and know by heart the lyrics – even in Arabic!

This song, a love song performed by an Israeli and a Palestinian has been broadcast simultaneously on Israel Army Radio and Voice of Palestine radio on Sunday, March 27, 2005.

The bilingual duet, entitled In My Heart, was sung in Hebrew and Arabic by Israeli David Broza and Palestinian Wisam Murad.

The two singers said they hoped the track would narrow the divisions between their communities.

Broza, who wrote the lyrics with Murad’s brother Said during sessions in Jerusalem that began two years ago, is well known in Israel for his folk and rock songs.

The Murads, Palestinians from Jerusalem, are known internationally as part of Sabreen, a group whose songs have explored the lives of Palestinians under Israeli occupation.

An Israel Army Radio announcer and the head of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) spoke on both stations, talking of their hopes for a new era of peace - but also sparring briefly in English over the airwaves.

“Have you stopped, sir, incitement messages in your broadcasts?” Army Radio’s Razi Barkai asked PBC director Adwan Abu Ayash. - “We did not start it,” came the reply.

    Sigh
What is very discouraging is that the evens do not match with the beautiful horizons that our hope promises, at the same time it is an honorable sacred attempt to keep the hope high and living, one day it might blossom and bear fruits for all the children of that troubled region. Amen

  • Elinor, yes - you are right! Especially now, after the last events and its consequences, I’m also a bit discouraged. But whatever happens, we shouldn’t give up… There are in fact lots and lots of such songs, lots of people on both sides who would just love to live in peace. There are moments of hope and moments of deep discouragement - but if we give up, nothing will ever happen! Salaam! :)

    Alice,
I have heard the song was prepared for peace in Arabic and Hebrew. A very nice song that both would also honor the ones who had lost their lives till the moment for peace arrived. In a way I am inspired by the efforts for peace in your region, I love to hear to sound of Salaam and Shalom from the land of Salaam and shalom, people living, farming, fishing, trading, kids going to school, tourists visiting, pilgrims praying at the all four sites holy for muslims jews, christians and bahais, wow, what would happen if the land become an example of peace and mutual undertanding and a practical ground for wall what the preachers of the religions have preached for. I love this dream. :)

  • Yes - it’s still a dream - but the more “dreamers” there will be, the bigger the chances will be to make it true… Someone once said: “If you want it, it isn’t a fairy tale” (Theodore Herzl - who, by the way, didn’t invision or plan any conflict between Jews and Arabs, but rather a state where both live together.. - very few people know that!) :)

    Alice,
Here i want people from Palestinian and Israeli side know about the Iranians who are all for the peace talks and end of conflict, unlike what the position of the government seems to be. The voice of regular people is the opposition voice, and the opposition is quite large, but not integrated, that’s why we are not in the center of attention, but we should get out of our caves and if we growl, we growl where every one hears :)

  • Elinor,
I know quite a lot about what you say about Iran. Before I started to post here, I wrote (and continue to write) on a Blog on Yahoo 360 - where I have quite a few Iranian friends. Whenever I tell my Israeli friends about these people, they are amazed at first, and then they understand and believe me that there is much more going on in Iran than we are told and hear in the regular media.. If you want to have a look at my other Blog, check out my profile - sending you flying, border crossing hugs!! :)
