Jahanshah, I think Jina is right when she suggests that a precipitous U.S. evacuation could result in Taliban style rule, as is already happening in parts of Iraq. Or it could result in a blood bath. Or it could result in a terrorist stronghold.

But more dangerous than anything, a precipitous pullout could threaten the West's oil supply. Why is this such a big deal? Because without the oil, Western economies will fall apart, and that would mean World War III. If the West is going to fight about anything, it is its economic well-being.

The war in Iraq was not all about oil, but oil was certainly at the heart of it. The reason the Middle East is taken so seriously by the West is its oil. You don't see us fighting in Africa. Do you?

As tempting as a pullout may be, I think it would be a mistake.

So far, over 20 countries, including those actively supporting the war in Iraq namely Spain, Canada, Japan and Italy, have withdrawn their troops from Iraq.
Canada was never part of the Iraq invasion. Canada never had any troops in Iraq. Canada was against the invasion.

Violence is still spreading in Iraq and the country is facing the danger of a civil war.
From what I see, they are already having a civil war.

As having got bogged down in Iraq, it is difficult for the US to open the second front against the Islamic Republic of Iran which is the main sponsor of terrorism
Keep repeating this and one day it will become true after a lot of people read this and believe it. Kind of like that WMD in Iraq thing the idiot Americans and their idiot firends fell for...

Nissan Dahan,
I support a US evacuation of Iraq with an eventual replacement of UN peace keeping troops.
As said the occupation did not bring fruit and even in sum aggravated the situation of Iraq. Concerning the US, it was a Bush administration's plan economically for "insider" oil companies but in the detriment of huge cost for the US national economy.

Quite an insightful analysis. You are suggesting that Iraq is not just about Iraq, but is rather the playing out of a power struggle between the region's certral players, including: Iran, Al Qaeda, Syria, the religious factions, etc.

In light of this power struggle, and considering the devastating consequences to the West of a disruption in oil, what do you think the U.S. should do in Iraq. The Democrats are saying "Get the hell out." McCain is saying "Stay in as long as it takes to win." And the American public is getting fed up. So what should we do in light of all that's at stake?
