Alice, I do admire your commitment to making a difference.

You speak of one drop making a difference in the world, because it can join with another drop, and another drop, until it is no longer just one drop. One drop joins with others of its own substance to create a stream.

So let's use this analogy. Suppose Alice wants to make a difference. She is just one person, after all. How does she join with others of her "substance" to increase her numbers, and to effectuate change?

To my mind, the commonality we all share, whether we like to admit it or not, is the commonality of common sense, the collective wisdom born of shared experience. Just like drops of water can come together because of their commonality of substance, so too can we come together by agreeing to adopt some common sense notions that are universally perceived as true, and therefore, universally accepted.

For various reasons, Alice, we've come to believe in a lot of stupid things. We not only believe in these things, but we're willing to kill one another for the sake of our beliefs, in God's name no less.

I say, let God speak for Himself. If He created us, in His own image, then it makes sense that we were put here on this good earth to live, not to kill, and not to die before our time.

We have to shake loose a lot of what we believe in favor of what we know, deep in our hearts, to be true, in favor of what makes sense. It is then that we will come together like drops of water and forge the stream that will take us in a new direction.
