Saudi cleric: Showing two eyes is seductive
October 4th, 2008In order to remedy his disturbing temptations, Saudi cleric Muhammad al-Habadan proposes a highly convenient solution for women: one-eyed veil.
A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.
Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive. [Source: BBC]
Great! I’ll start drilling a hole in my bed sheets right away.
But in all seriousness, such disturbing calls only further objectifies women, inviting “religious” clerics to harass and disrespect them in ways that are no longer acceptable.
I have a more fitting proposal for clerics in favor of this bogus call; gouge your eyes out with a tack hammer if you wish to refrain from being seduced. Women should no longer pay the price of your disturbing and sickening mentalities.

Even though I do wear hijab, it’s been almost two years since I believed in its requirement. The argument for the importance (/obligation) of hijab struck me as projecting women as sexualized object in its essence, althought that’s what hijab was supposedly meant to shield us from.
I doubt the religious youth who’d parrot his words give much thought to what they’re saying. I wonder why many men in the region are willing to believe they have penises for brains?
Societies all over the world change and adjust their manner of clothing to facilitate movement, but he proposes a move backwards. It’s telling though of the role he expects women to have in society.
Our scholars have a right to say what they want. If you dont want to wear the hijab, thats your issue. In the end, we all meet Allah, and he judges us. These scholars are there to give us good advice.
Maybe it would be worth your while to advise those people who wear miniskirts and act like Westerners, and have no pride in being a Muslim. They have no character, instead they follow the way of the West, thinking its freedom. Freedom is being obedient to Allah, and Slavery is in acting like Shaytaan.
Dear Abu Jihad,
These scholars may have the right to say what they want, but certainly they shouldn’t expect us to abide by their ill-informed, self-important advice that is in fact embarrassing to even have to listen to.
If you consider this good advice, I would advise you to please try to function normally for a whole day with only one eye exposed. Then come back and discuss “good advice” upon this amusing experiment.
That’s not my issue, that’s my choice. Either way we expect this choice to be fully respected. This is not about the West, and those who claim it is lack a basic understanding of a woman and her values. Indeed it is pitiful for such things to be justified in our societies.
This is so unbelievably backward… I guess its just a sign that Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan has no control over his desires that he feels this is a necessary step to take. Maybe he should instead work on controlling his urges instead of trying to suggest such ridiculous things. The act of resisting temptation is supposed to be the sign of a strong human being, which I guess he is not!
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.
Well said Kawthar; exactly what I was thinking.
Like siter Esra’a has stated before. Those scholars have the right to say what they want and what they think is right.
What ticks me off, however, is the atitude of those so called “scholars”. They undermine whoever differs with their opinion.
I strongly believe in a woman having to wear hijab . Its however the real meaning and essence of “hijab” that is misinterpreted nowadays! I mean seriously, where is it stated that the “legal islamic” hijab should make a woman look like a walking tent O_o ?
I don’t get it really! Ok, a woman does her job by not exposing herself inappropriately, but GOD what about those ill-minded guys..(on a side not, i am a guy btw). How about they work on resisting their urges and temptations.
It the mentality and education of their youth they should work on. If they do that, the rest is easy.
Oh yh, and Allah knows best ^^ !
Instead of a one eyed burka, I have a good idea, how about putting small LCD Monitors that was designed for the blind, to retofit in front of the eyes. So the women will be covered from head to toe with the bukra, and 2 small LCD monitors will be attached in front of the eyes, they will see the world through the LCD Monitors.
That way, everyone will be satisfied in meeting morality, peace, happiness and avoiding sin and sinful thoughts etc. Please say if this work because either sony or toshiba will be more than happy to fulfil the order.
Allah Diciple
How about mirrored sunglasses?
Better. Use Sonars.
And if the lady had just one eye?
Safe until a cleric develops a fetish for one-eyed women.
haha, that was cool Esra’a
When/where did the hijab originate? Was the ‘tent’ outfit described in the Qur’an or the hadiths specifically or has it developed over time?
Well, I just happened to come across this website, and I think that this is completely ridiculous, haha. As Moodz above me have said, women could do their part by covering themselves appropriately. If there are still guys who are tempted, well, then they should do their part by watching over their urges.
As for the ‘walking tent’, I don’t think the Qur’an specifically stated it to be designed like that (just which parts to be covered, I think?). (CMIIW) But clothes in where Islam originated, around Arab, clothes were already designed to cover a lot of space and be baggy to tackle the hot climate.
So, you’re supposed to have eyepatches like pirates now? Harrr…
I think a far better solution to the whole sexual attraction thing would be to equip every adult female with a pistol and cutlass (parrot on the shoulder optional), and have mandatory classes in using them. Nothing says gender equality like a sword in the ribs, Matey!
It’s amazing that these men blame the women for the men’s lack of control.
How about cut off your penis?
Then you won’t care what women look like.
Not THAT would show God some dedication.
[...] Youth’s Esra’a gives her take on the Saudi cleric’s ruling that women should only show one eye, and Myrtus weighs in, [...]
Reading this funny piece of news, I think the opposite is happening. The more you hide something, the more it becomes (sexually) appealing. But the more you show it and we (I am a male
enjoy seeing it (every day! For example working for a beautiful female boss) the more it becomes “normal life” and your brain can easily concentrate on something else.
What is wrong in the pleasure to watch beauty, i.e. the creation of Allah? Even the most beautiful “things” become “common” after some time: we become used to them.
Oh My God! How come such learned scholars utter such meaningless statements. Community should watch out for the commonsense and IQ level for those who become clerics otherwise people will get to see more such meaningless quests.
