Saudi girls rocking it!!
November 24th, 2008Yes, you read it right. I believe this is the first all female Saudi rock band. They call themselves “Accolade” and their first single is called ” Pinocchio”.
In an ultra conservative country such as Saudi Arabia, an all female rock band is not exactly the norm! These four college students were brave enough to follow their dreams and stand against the tides of a society that is hardly forgiving to such taboos.
Here is an article about them in The New York Times and you can listen to their song on myspace
I was actually surprised when I heard their music, they are talented.
These girls live in Jeddah, which is known to have a much more relaxed atmosphere than other parts of the kingdom. There are more and more male bands and concerts playing openly for the public, and you can even notice that there is less segregation between the genders in restaurants and shopping malls.
I have visited Jeddah a few weeks back. It really felt as if I had entered another country! People are much more relaxed and women can actually be comfortable in their own skin! unlike other areas of Saudi Arabia where women are made to feel awkward just by their mere presence in public.
But still, an all girls rock band does break so many social chains even in Jeddah. They won’t be able to perform in public unless they do private parties or for all girls only. None the less , their music is being heard and downloaded from inside and outside the kingdom.
I am excited to see such talents from our youths and I look forward to listening to more of their music. I do hope they will be given the chance to continue what they just started.

Hehe i was shocked at first but I’m really impressed, This’s a First Indeed…. way to go girls /M\
Let’s hope their dream comes true (being able to perform live in Saudi itself!)
In the past I had an interview with a Yemeni hip hop singer. Young people today consider music to be one of the best ways for self-expression, and my next podcast will verify this.
It was nice to see in their article their disapproval of alcohol, drugs, et al, as most people think it comes with this kind of lifestyle. These young ladies still have a lot of respect for their religion, country, and traditions and that’s really an integral part of society.
Congrats to these ladies and also kudos to NYT for highlighting this, proving to the world once again that we’re not really that different, as opposed to what we read on extremist right-wing blogs and Fox News that perceive our youth to be spending their free time behind mountains plotting the next 9/11.
HI

Thats really good news….and really good song, I have to say.
What strikes me as a strange is that the vast majority of the global mass media outlets would always be ready to actually cover any kind of story associated with saudi woman no matter what..
Rock on…

Wow, i’m shocked! (in a good way). Very impressed, good luck to those girls, I have a feeling they will be huge, and maybe one day they will expose their faces in the media.
Rock On, im very proud of them.
Masha’Allah they are allowed do this now in Saudi. Nabi Mohammed (SAW) would be so proud of them if he was around.
