In the Morning

December 12th, 2008Kawthar (Sudan)

According to a recent report, nearly 350 men and women were murdered in the name of honour since 2001 in Turkey. The list of ‘offences’ that are perceived to bring shame to a family is long, and includes falling a victim to rape.

“In the Morning” is a short and powerful film that is based on the story of Kadriye Demirel, a young woman who was murdered by her own brother, after informing her family that she was raped. The rapist (who was a cousin of hers) denied the accusations and refused to marry her, the authorities failed to protect her, and in November 2003, Kadriye was brutally murdered. She was 6 months pregnant.

  1. This is so sad. Honor killings must be stopped, this goes against every religion and mind-set in this world. It is incomprehensible and unacceptable.

  2. That is a tragedy, what did they do the cousin who raped her, and refused to acknowledge and save his own child??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  3. Can I ask about the ‘men’ who were killed because of honour?
Were they killed for admitting to sex, or for other reasons?

I knew of guys getting killed in disputes in other Arab or Islamic countries, with honour traditions, but not necessarily for honour. One particular case I know of instead was because of a territorial dispute.
