Podcasting from Gaza: Ramzy in Gaza gives an on-the-ground account of the attacks
December 28th, 2008Hundreds have died so far and there is no sign of Israel quitting its aggressive attacks against innocent civilians. The international world is reacting but Ramzy, who is a young teacher in Gaza and occasional author on Mideast Youth, notes that it’s doing so far too slowly. There is no way to put it, despite many justifications by American and Israeli sources, but what Gazans are going through is undeniably a grave form of terrorism, in every sense of the word.
It was hard finding a source within Gaza due to lack of electricity, but I am glad to have gotten through to Ramzy where he provides an on-the-ground opinion in this podcast below.
Our hearts and prayers go out to our friends and all innocent civilians in Gaza, who wish for nothing more than their freedom and security. As Ramzy implies throughout the podcast, both Hamas and Israel are using innocent people as tools in a massive game of corruption, showing them no respect or mercy whatsoever.

It is tragic, but it also underscores an important point in this conflict: Even if Hamas is “defeated”, where will the power in Gaza go? I don’t think that the Israelis believe for a second that mortar and other attacks on them from Gaza will cease if Hamas is crippled or wiped out. This is a terror attack; it’s not intended to deliberately target civilians (as you seemed so eager to believe with your hospital question Esra’a) but it is also absurd to think that air to surface missles fired into densely populated civilian areas isn’t basically just that.
The Israelis have understood that there is enough lack of sympathy for Hamas that they can get a “pass” in trying to cripple them before outrage at the bloodshed mounts. Hamas has apparently not understood that continuing to attack an enemy with vastly superior firepower will eventually result in vicious reprisals.
I do agree with Hamas on one point though: there is no point to Israel’s continued blockade of Gaza’s access to the outside world. It is intended to stop bullets and bombs coming into Gaza and that seems to be the only thing that is getting through. Hamas and the other, independant players are still lobbing mortars and missles, and the destabilizing effect of isolating all other aspects of Gazan life is guaranteeing that those doing so will never want for reinforcements.
If Israel were serious about wishing for a peaceful neighbor, they wouldn’t sustain the conditions that keep the most hostile form of government in that neighbor strong through desperation.
Sorry, the facts prove otherwise. It gets pretty tedious having to swift through justifications of a severely corrupt policy. We’re dealing with acts of a war crime here.
And much of what you said, is still easy for you to say, in the comfort of your home, than from the battleground of one of the most dangerous places in the region.

Very deep and touching podcast, I don’t know how to express my sadness in words.
I was arguing with a bunch of bozos on Facebook about why this attack wasn’t justified, and the damn page froze up on me. Just venting my frustration here. People who think this attack was warranted will NEVER change their minds anyway, it’s like asking the KKK to recognize non-whites are just as human as they are or asking Nazis to sympathize with Jews. Ain’t gonna happen.

Hi Amira, it is alarming and truly frightening to explore the amount of people justifying this. I don’t remember the number of times I’ve seen “Jew-hater, terrorists, et al” in either blogs or Facebook notes when all people are trying to do is express solidarity with innocent Palestinian people. Apparently that makes you a Nazi.
However there are demonstrations going on right now in Tel Aviv to protest these war crimes, and more than likely these people will be harrassed, just like they were the last time they did this. There’s also this post from Jewschool, where incessant paranoia and irrelevant fear of a “Jewish holocaust” do not dominate. These are Jews and Israelis speaking for Gazan rights. Traitors, as many other Israelis would call them.
When did muslim or palestinian become a race? Hamas has been shooting rockets and mortars right through the entire “cease fire”. Now they are getting what they have asked for. They should be happy. Now, as they prevent wounded from recieving medical aid offered by Egypt, they can run up the numbers to get more sympathy……good play! Disgusting is what I really meant.

Overnight the Israeli aerial bombing in Gaza didn’t stop. The air strikes targeted mosques, universities, houses and security outposts. 310 Palestinians have been killed and 1430 others injured in the attacks most of them are civilians. Medical sources confirmed.
Israel knows no red lines and it is above humanitarian and international laws. As if it is licensed to kill the Palestinians not only kill them but also starve them and imprison them by a strangling inhuman siege. Before the Israeli military operation started, Gaza has been under strict siege for two years. What did the world at the official level do to left this siege. Nothing. And it is still doing nothing to stop the Israeli attacks against Gaza. This isn’t not new news.
The whole world is taking the watcher position as the Palestinian people in Gaza are being slaughtered by the Israeli deadly and high sophisticated war machine like it has been watching it begging Israel to let into Gaza the medicine, food, fuel and other essentials and like it has been watching Egypt closing its borders before the Palestinians wishing to travel for education or treatment under the pretext of some stupid crossing agreement it brokered with Israel in 2005. It is sad to say that the West and the Arab world in cooperation with Israel are pushing the Palestinians to surrender to Israel using the civilians and their needs.
I know that the people of the whole world sympathizes with us and wish they can do more than just taking to the streets in demonstrations to protest the Israeli continued slaughter against the Palestinians which is very much appreciated by the Palestinians. But still these protests and demonstrations wont stop Israel, wont stop the bloodshed. Israel is a killer state. It was made by killing the Palestinian women, children and old men in bloody massacres back in 1948 and the world did nothing too back then. In 2003 in the Israeli operation ” defensive wall” in the west bank, Israel flattened Jenin camp with the ground, killed and wounded hundreds of Palestinians. It seems like it is no use demanding Israel to stop this bloodshed. Israel wants the Palestinians to surrender to it at any cost even if this would mean killing the entire Palestinian people. And as long as its crimes pass smoothly and without any serious reaction on part of the international community or the Arab world. What would bar Israel from continuing its crimes?
I never tried to justify the Israeli actions against us and never wanted to. But since there is no true justice in this world and since there is no power that can save us from the Israeli crimes. We have no other choice but to surrender to spare our lives. The second choice is to let Israel wipe us out, to continue our self-sacrifice wishing the world it would one day wake up and do something serious for us. Shall we continue to walk blindly to our demise at the hands of Israel?
Those who have tried to patronize me, who live in comfort and safety in their homes in the US or Europe or even the Arab world. Would you feel happy to lose your parents or one of your brothers or sisters. Please have some mercy on us. The Palestinian are unable to fight Israel. Of course, the entire Jewish people are at fault for the current conflict. Not only does this statement disregard palestinian culpability, it also assumes that all Jews are working in and/or together with the Israeli government – just like how all muslims are working for al-qaida (sarcasm).
I also have a hard time believing that palestinians are being cooked in ovens or sent to gas chambers. The comparing Israel (and anything else such as American or Arab governments for that matter) to Nazi Germany thing is getting kinda old and overused. This is a war with two sides killing each other, not some one-sided genocidal rampage.
Homemade weapons can still be very lethal. Also, What makes you think the palestinians don’t have access to good weapons. the black market is full of goodies. Futhermore, palestinian militant groups have benefactors throughout the Middle East who furnish them with arms.
Also, why should Israel be penalized for organizing and establishing an army to defend itself? Why should they automatically be given the burden of responsibility for the conflict simply because they were better oganized in their formative years? I know you’re smart enough not to compare this to a billion-dollar army with the best military technology in the region, if not the world. How many trained soldiers does Israel have as opposed to Hamas? Israel has the capability to completely dismantle Palestine, not leaving a single pulse beating there, with the approval and support of the USA. And Israel already does that at every outrageous opportunity. Palestine does not and will never have such an affect. You don’t have to kill them all to make sure of that.
When was the last time in Israel did thousands of people die or were injured in a single day as a result of Palestinian aggression? How do people live in luxurious Israel and how are people living right now in Gaza? No one in their right might would sypmathize with your argument, which you cannot even factually back up. This is another inaccruate attempt at a refutation. Consider this example and tell me if it is at all logical or not:
- I enter your house and shoot you and your entire family because someone you didn’t know (but shared your nationality) was planning to attack me with a poorly designed weapon that barely functions and would’ve killed 1 or 2 people at most.
- When asked by others why I did this, I’d say, “Madmax is Jewish, and could’ve had weapons in storage, he could’ve totally killed me!”
With such poor logic anyone can kill absolutely anyone and get away with it. If thousands of innocent civilians are seriously threatening to the Israeli government then Palestinians should not have to pay for your government’s stupidity and pathetic paranoia. A lot of Jews are wise enough to condemn this 150%, many of them joined rallies all over the world standing with Gaza. Sad to see you’re not one of them. They too think the Israeli government is run by war criminals who in a just world would be imprisoned for their severe abuse. War crimes vs. Self defense. m, if you are an Israeli, might I point out that there are literally millions of Muslims in your country who are not savagely attacking Jews, but normal, peaceful, law abiding citizens like everyone else. Even Iran, who does not have the nicest official policy towards Israel, has a sizeable Jewish minority and has political representation for said minority enshrined in it’s Islamic constitution…So how about we leave the knee-jerk bigotry about religion out of this.
Yeah Esra’a I’m sitting here nice and safe and it’s easy for me to say so, but then again pretty much everyone here but Ramszy can be labeled that way…including you. The tone being set here amidst the carnage is in interesting one, though…both you and Ramszy have pointed out that the main reason for the IDF attack is the ongoing rocket and mortar fire from Gaza, and that it is completely disproportionate because they are very inaccurate and have only killed a few people. So, it would be ok if those rockets had killed hundreds? Is it alright to keep fighting, for civilians to die as long as a roughly equal amount on both sides are murdered?
The harsh truth of this is that Israel is firing at an enemy military who is in the midst of civilians that they don’t care about to terrorize them enough that they stop their attacks. Hamas and it’s little splinter groups launch the best armaments they can get at both civilians and the IDF because they like to kill anyone dwelling on that side of the border, in order to eventually destroy that country and either kill or drive out it’s inhabitants, because their land was stolen.
Fair enough. Both sides elected their governments, and both sides are reaping the results. We are now in the fourth generation after the founding of Israel. It won’t go away without a genocidal massacre of it’s mostly Jewish population, certainly not in the any way that it’s enemies envision.
I feel horrible for the civilians dying in this; it’s going to get a great deal worse this week. The IDF is not going to stop until they rack up a few fatalities of their own, and there is still 3 weeks before politics will pull the plug on it.
But, at least the entire population isn’t being ethnically cleansed out of that strip of land, the survivors having no choice but to run into Egypt or die. There will be no systematic killing of the entirety of the inhabitants with absolute disregard for their humanity or right to live.
After all, the IDF and Hamas are not exactly the same.
I didn’t want to get into this debate but it’s the only real way to refute this whole idea of “Jews” being endangered in the region, as if other minorities do not suffer (and without financial/PR backing from America or a powerful military.)
I should add that in Bahrain, Jews are protected by law and receive special attention from the government. Never in their existence here did anyone attack or threaten to kill them, even though everyone knows where and who they are. They run profitable businesses which we all use regardless of it being famously led by Jewish families. We live side by side peacefully. Not that the Israeli media has ever pointed that out.
This is very much unlike other minorities, which the global mainstream media continues to ignore, obsessing only about the Jewish minority. Why? There are so many others like Kurds and Baha’is who are being abused while the Jews enjoy their full human rights. They are not the only minority who were forced to leave historically. There are millions of Sunnis, Baha’is, Shi’ites, Kurds, who are forced to leave their countries because of internal threats, my family being one of them. But we never declared war on our original homelands. We never justified abuse.
Iran has been in political war with my country for decades; claiming this land as their own, funding dangerous militant groups here and fueling internal violence that risks people’s lives. And yeah we are scared, but no one here goes and dismantles Iran and kills thousands of innocent civilians just because of this threat, because it’s wrong. Israel does that. And that is why we are pissed. It’s not anti-Semitisim. More and more Israelis and Jews are coming out to say stop the bloodshed in Gaza.

I was very saddened by Ramzy’s description of the situation. The whole Israel vs the world scenario seems so much like the continuation of the domestic violence cycle: Israel was founded by those who had experienced violence & hate and are now visiting the same on those around them. As an American who strongly opposes the blanket approval and funding of Israel it’s painful to have the world believe that all Americans condone their behavior. Hamas & Israel should both be condemned for putting their citizens -their most precious resource- at such risk. Pain is universal, so is grief. It’s enough. Both the Palestinian & Israeli people deserve to have a generation grow up without the burden of trying to “win” an unwinnable contest.

This situation is very saddening, I’ve known Ramzy for more than a year and half now, he has been dreaming of leaving Gaza to obtain his masters degree, but every time he is given a hope of making it out, Israel closes the border. It’s so sad to see that he together with the people of Gaza, are living in a prison, where there is no way of knowing if anyone will see the light of day again. I talked to him today and he said he was ok, unfortunately the mobile towers were hit and he only has access to a land line, he is hoping this war ends soon and that peace is restored in Gaza. As he said it feels like the world is doing nothing to stop Israel from killing innocent people, children for God sake. I can only try to imagine how hard it must be for everyone to see their loved ones die in front of them. May Allah bring peace to Gaza soon.
