Minority Map

January 23rd, 2009Esra'a (Bahrain)

Minority MapThere are many diverse ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East and North Africa that are hardly noted. Some of them suffer severe persecution. We felt it’s crucial to create a map that locates every minority we can get information on, with a brief summary of their situation as well as their status, such as whether they’re protected by law, severely persecuted, or “of concern” (as in, they supposedly have their rights on document but suffer societal discrimination.)

This map is far from perfect and is a work in progress, both in terms of research and development. We made it so you can search the map by country or minority, or to view it by category (ethnic, or religious.) The orange “people” icon locates religious minorities while the blue one locates ethnic ones, which we have yet to research extensively, hence why there isn’t much information currently displayed on the map.

In order to , just hover your mouse over any of the icons, and a box containing the information should pop out:

This map comes with a backend where we can insert and edit information, since stats and situations are always changing. Currently it’s only open for suggestions from the public as some of our public maps have been severely abused (people placing insults and inapprorpriate, irrelevant material.) We intend for this map to be used as both an awareness tool on minorities who require help as well as an educational tool for those interested in learning about regional minorities.

We hope you find this useful. Please feel free to suggest any edits. We searched throughout many sources, both local and international, on minority stats and it took us a while to compile this information as accurately as possible. However if you feel that any information is incorrect please let us know.

  1. You forgot Christians/Assyrians in Iraq who are severely persecuted and I would argue that Christians in Egypt are not “protected” recent news would suggest otherwise.

  2. DB,

As Esra’a has said, the map is still in a work in progress, and we recognize that many additions are still required, and edits needed; your input is appreciated.

And if anyone has comments or observations, or would like to assist us in research, leave a message here or send us a note
