Kill the Iraqi gays?

6 Iraqi gay people were executed by machine guns in Sader city in April 2009, this makes the number of executed gays in Iraq reach 10 after 4 other executions in March in the last few weeks, 25 boys and men are reported to have been killed in Baghdad because they were, or were perceived to be, gay. Three corpses of gay men were found in the Shia area of Sadr City last week – two of which were reported to have had pieces of paper bearing the word “pervert” attached to them. The Iraqi police condemned the action and said we will bring the killers to justice, as in Iraq since Saddam days there is no law forbidding people to become gay, but there is a strike tribal law to execute any one how dishonor the tribe name and acting as a gay means you dishonored the tribe and the tribe council will give the permission to kill you to your close relatives as in brother, fathers and cousins, it is an honor for them to have the chance to eliminate this part of the tribe that had brought the heads of the family down as they describe it.
But during Saddam days this tribal law lost its effective authority with the rise of the central government law, which considers homosexuality as a non-threatening issue to the party or the government, in the contrary it was useful to keep homosexual activities’ under discretion in a country were men are forced to stay for years in their army units on the front and women were stuck in houses waiting for them ,as Iraq went from 1 war to another the percentage of women to men became very high as into 3 to 1, gay behaviors were known in the society but kept in a forbidden discreet area were no one is allowed to mention it , if someone was found it usually was explained as curiosity or hyper activity and they rush the boy into marriage , as for women such acts were never found out due to close women society and the gap between the male and female members of the family as tradition and religion make it unorthodox to socialize between them ,making even the relation ship between family members distend and non personal ,so what happens in the women quarters are kept there
After 2003 a rise in the attack against gay people in Iraq started to show a return of the tribal power and rise of radical extremist calls to cleans the community of these weak people who had fallen to the temptation of the devil , a well known café for gays in Baghdad was burned to the ground ,many were beaten ,killed or kidnapped and in some cases they were raped by the same people who oppressed them for their homosexuality
Threats to any family how had gay member to start to take action against their relative or the tribe or the militia will do so, a UN human rights report in 2006 documented many cases of savage attacks against gays in Iraq, Amnesty International has urged The Iraqi government TO do more to protect homosexuals in the wake of a reported spate of killings of gay young men.
In a letter to Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, the rights organisation called for “urgent and concerted action”. It also criticised the government’s failure to condemn the killings.
The recent killings are said to have been carried out by armed Shia militiamen as well as by members of the tribes and families of the victims, Amnesty said.
The letter also raised concerns that religious leaders may be inciting violence against members of Iraq’s gay community, and over reported statements by one senior police officer that appear to condone or even encourage the targeting of gay Iraqis, as it is told that in the web site of one of the biggest Shia holy men in Iraq he had answered a question on what to do against gays by answering they must be killed and not a normal death but a death after a judgment from the tribe and community to provide a near execution to the religious’ punishments’ .
Amnesty called on the government to bring those responsible for the killings to justice and to afford effective protection to the gay community in Iraq.

This is so hard to hear. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Great article.
Check out gaymiddleeast.com for more GLBT news in the region.
I feel very confused whenever i read anything about this subject. i believe that every human being has the right to choose “how does he want to live..how does he want to spend those years!”..
never thought about hating someone for being “Gay or Lesbian!” ..
here in Iraq just like all the Islamic societies it’s hard to talk about sexual things even in front of those who say “we are liberal!”..
I believe that most of them are not really gays! They are a straight guys who been suffered from very bad conditions and they feel so depressed! They couldn’t fall in love in the most normal ways! They couldn’t get married.. they have sexual needs just like everybody! With a Little awareness in everything.. with a huge pressure because of living in this country. So they turn to be “Bisexual” not a pure gay! We are living in a country when u can walk in the street freely with your sister!!!!!!!!
And the real problem is it won’t be only about Gay people, it will be even for those who wear fashionable clothes like tight shirts and pants, to those who shave their mustache!! Or wearing rings, or necklace!

The article seems very confusing to me.
I do support the cause, however, I didn’t really get the message or conclusion(?).
Like you said yourself, under Saddam it was all supposed to put a wrong complexion on him just like he decreased illiteracy. In a system that is entirely immoral and vicious even the things that appear to be good cannot be praised, as served this sort of ‘devil’.
Please do correct me if I got you wrong, though.
Dear Mend , the iraqi state befor 2003 is the only thing we have to compare things to , i am telling the story of what i know about the subject , or at lest my truth the one i know or heard, i am not praising any one , cause no leader in all my life in iraq scince was born till today did any thing for the iraqi people ,we just trying to belife that what we are living through for the past 6 years will end soon ,as soon as we feel littel safe ,we see pictures of people killed and throwen in the garbage , i am talking here not just for human rights ,but because i am afriad as Rana said that wearing jeanz will be against god and i will get killed for wearing one , cause i was their in baghdad and saw people getting killed for sealing ice ,or cutting people hairs and beards ,and so on
i am not trying to praise saddam days or the devil work ,but my life in iraq is divded into saddam days and after saddam days , and i am afriad to wake up to find that for having the secuirty and stablity we took wrong turn and go back to that dark times ,also i am afriad that the people we over look their hidden crimes aginst others will remain powerful as time make media and the world turn away from iraq to afghanstan and we will be left alone
this my explain my conclusion or why i worte this
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)
I guess the message is this: if you live in a hellhole and your life sucks, or you are just a straight-up loser in life, kill homosexuals. Killing them is a death ecstasy in which you can release your hate, anger, or frustration in life.
But will it make a man out of them?
its crime against humanity …….everyone has the right to live as he want ..
james you right man…
Condemning these acts of brutality against the civilians of Iraq is a must. As I can not bear to look at the pictures and as my heart fills with rage and hopelessness, I think aobut tomorrow, when you wouldn’t hear of any one daring to break the rules of Humanity any where around the Middle East. A day where the people from other countries of the world would take refuge in Middle East to feel safe, regardless of their religion, belief, lifetyle, tendencies, ethnicities. It will be that way, that is because we all have suffered and these sufferings will one day bloom into an acheivement, a very apparent and undenieable one, we deserve that, after suffering much. Int eh New Middle East there is room for every one, and no one would Dare to threaten Any one Else, because the just institutions of law and the skillful executives would keep the soeiety safe. I pray.
Homosexuals pose a danger to children–this pro homosexual propaganda is just another form of the colonialist mentaity of the usual suspects–its best to retain our own naitonal cultures world wide & not to submit to this new colonialism–from VENEZUELA to VIETNAM & ALL NAITONS IN BETWEEN!!!! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRIBA LOS MACHOS
friend ,you do not seem fit to comment
Also transgendered people are killed in Iraq.
I’ve personally tried to collect as much information as possible about those who were killed/tortured because of the transgendered nature on the English version of my blog:
Remembering Our Dead: http://tgegypt.com/?page_id=28
yes your right jasmin ,attack were against all kind of non hetrosexual people ,also their were attacks on people how are suspected of having hetrosexual relationship outside marriage ,and attack aginst people who just have relationships not involving sex ,all in the name of god and trditions of the tribs
now how you all can tell that this happened because they are gays by only looking at this pictures!??? peoples are killed in iraq every day n most of the times no one knows why!!! this is very sad and nohing got to do with islam….peace, fogivness, right to live, acceptance is what islam is about. By what i don’t understand is those people who want to make the idea of gays n lesbo as something related to human rights and that every country in the earth must accept that???!!!! ok i don’t have problem with the person, he can be what he want….but don’t try to talk about other countries believes and cultures while you don’t understand yours well…not only that, american them self huge % having problem….our religion and culture say that this is not accepted and wrong. having said so, this does not mean not giving them the right to live. but don’t come and tell me our country must accept it and acknowleges it….its so funny how they blame countries and pointing at them as not following human rights!!! while within there own country most of human rights are violate!! what u have to understand is we have our own culture and believes and we don’t need someone to lecture us to follow their own….don’t speek as you know every thing about the country and its ppl while u even can’t point it out on the map!!!!
if you read arbic ,or read iraqi newspapers or in iraq ,you know very well that the sign on their chests say ( monhareef) mean gay , and if you ever in your life was in iraq ,baghdad and went in the past 10 years to sader city ,as some of us human rights people do all the time in iraq ,you would have known the gays coffee shop and when it was attacked and burned ,and it is not about human rights ,it is about why we have to live in a country where we have people killed and throwen in the garbage ? this is not human rights this is our right to live in safe place ,where all of us can life free, gay is not excepted in islam or iraq culture , i did not meet any gay people in iraq so i olny hear stories ,but this is not human what happened ?
and also coruption and taking bribes is not accepted in islam ,why the miltia that kill gay people also do the same to theifs in goverment offices ,and people who alwyes open their hands for money in iraq to do their jobs ?
we want to build and live in normal country ,in normal places ,we do not kill people and through them on streets ,and by the way without human rights ,no one in iraq would have the courage to talk free on the intrent ,remmber the old days friend
And this never happened during Saddam’s Rule…
And the atrocious blood-thirsty homophobic/transphobic Al-Sistani who made the genocidal ‘Fatwa’ (to kill all homosexual people in the worst ways possible as by burning or throwing off the highest cliff) was nominated for a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE by no one but Geroge W. Bush, who criticized Ahmadinejad’s country -Iran- for being homophobic and persecuting of homosexuals….
Funny world… Gender/Sex variant people are killed, and diplomats are twisting it in their favor… The Hell with your diplomacy America, is all what I have to say… And if your religion is about persecuting and killing innocent civilians who do not hurt you in anyway, then to hell with your religion too. “To each their own” and “Live and let Live”…

A good homo is a dead homo !

Wow,what a bunch of sickos’!!
Wasn’t Mohammed the prophet gay??
Sick sick sick!!
They really need to stop killing them now,it’s very evil!!
hi..im iraqi gay im escape iraq cos im gay now i live in finland iv freedom here,i can study, work, live here nobody come to kill me here, but im so sad for those gays who still in iraq and bad live!!!!!
Hey Moher Fucker Ringo, who says that our Prophet Mohammed was a gay, you are wrong , shut up ass hole, as you don’t speack what you know but what you hear from jews, daaaam it, ediot always you will remain.
What a disgusting religion! I’ve been liberal and open-minded about Islam and there barbaric ways for years. I’m done. I thought that Christianity had problems, but Man, Islam has it beat in the hate department. Why do Americans still sacrifice their lives for this Middle Ages cult? I enjoyed watching a rag-head family being profiled and publicly humiliated in the security line at the San Diego airport yesterday. Travel was enjoyable before we allow this filth to infiltrate our shores. Death to Mohamed and his multitude of whores!
To pick up very briefly on the comment on the alleged pro-homosexuality mentality by colonialism:
It was actually the other way round. The Middle East tolerated and accepted homosexuality as a ‘semi-common’ practice in society up until around 1920. Particularly Iran and Iraq were according to scholars highly tolerant. However when the British, French ect settled their colonies in the Middle East in the early 20th century their culture became normative, enforced respectively, leading to an unstoppable stream of anti-homosexuality.
It is simply sad how history sometimes takes a horrific ride.
In the end of 60s, early 70s I used to live in this truly beautiful country and it breaks both my heart and spirit to see it as it stands, or rather lies today.
I genuinely hope that Iraq soon accepts and encourages liberal values as it once did.
dear friends
i am sorry that you hold such hate ,the crimes i mention in my article are hate crimes ,cause the miltia could not understand the other because he was different
religion has nothing to do with it ,they use it as a tool to kill in its name
hate and not trying to understand the other is the source of all problems ,when you feel happy to see other suffering then what makes you different from the radical militia ?
keep this in you mind next time you decide to judge others
Thank you Marcus,
I am moved by your reply and know in my heart what you describe below is, in fact, reality. If you are a Muslim, you are a wonderful representative of this great world religion. I am a cynical, secular person, so sometimes my tolerance for religious points of view is limited. Your respectful response to my shameless rant gave me cause to stop and analyze my own weakness in falsely judging others before considering all perspectives. Thank you for pointing this out to me. I retract and apologize for any offensive opinion I may have expressed regarding the Muslim faith or the Prophet Mohamed. It was stated out of anger and fear and represents the very ignorant utterance that I find repellent. You are obviously a kind and sensitive man. May our mutual/universal “God” bless you. I mean this sincerely.
Cheers,
Donny
Dear Warmith,
I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of “judgment.’ I admit to being a hypocrite and would like nothing more than living in peace together. I tried to apologize for my ignorant remarks above to Marcus. Homosexuality really has nothing to do this. More to the point, this is about secularism vs. religion. I used this particular article as a launching point. However, after reading your reply and Marcus’ reply, I feel strangely at peace and regret my earlier post. Human kindness goes so far, it’s unbelievable. You and Marcus have demonstrated that to me in this forum. Thank you both.
Donny
dear doony
i am grateful for your nice words and i am sure you did mean any harm ,i respect others right not to like my religion , i had many conservation on many traditional acts enforced through time in islam , but i belive all human had some kind of faith in peace and kindness in there heart we should support it and protect our societies from the dark faith of hate and ignorance which unfortunately has become wildly spread these days and many try to us religions as cover for there crimes
best to you and to every one who participated in this discussion
hi..please dear nader can u be quite!!? cos they are gays and the badly killing in iraq is for gays,so how u say this is only picture is the people dosnt know right things????

i just hurt me when i read this articles….why some people could feel so bad about someone of who they are….and feel relief when they get rid of them…..it sucks….those people should all need to go to mental hospital ….
I have been exploring for a little bit for any high-quality articles or blog posts on this sort of area . Exploring in Yahoo I at last stumbled upon this site. Reading this info So i’m happy to convey that I’ve a very good uncanny feeling I discovered just what I needed. I most certainly will make sure to don’t forget this website and give it a glance regularly.
It may have been said already but it needs to be said again. Reading other comments..
Nobody chooses to be gay! I remember being gay as early as I remember..like 3 years old. I noticed it because it was so obviously not hetero.
So many muslims are suffering from the hatred against them. Do you think they have not tried everything? This is an issue close to me. I know.
It is not to be changed. It is to be accepted. its not all about sex its about love. Just like hetero marriage. To live alone for life is not living at all. Its just not an option, could you do it?
A few more lies and myths:
Gay and pedophile are NOT the same! Sorry its long.. but so is the ignorance.
Like saying straight men want to molest little girls.
HomoPHOBIA and hate is an import of Western origin!
Alot of gay love poetry and art in middle east history.
