Google’s Persian translator sucks!

June 19th, 2009Lord Kavi (Iran)

Today, Google launched its Farsi to English and vice versa translator option in Google Translate.

Farsi (Persian) language is very different of English in statement structure. The most obvious difference is the position of verb in statement. For example:

In English: Today is a good day to study.
This statement in Farsi: Today, day a good to study is.

Google translator can’t translate this phenomenon and even sometimes omits the verbs, both in English to Farsi and Farsi to English.
Another problem is Farsi’s words multiple meanings. Google translation can’t understand what does these words in the context mean. In Farsi, a word can have many meanings related to the statement context.

By the way, Google’s English to Farsi translation is much better than the opposite which is bullshit I believe.

  8. Kavi,

I think you’re being too harsh; it was only recently rolled out and is still in ALPHA mode.

    It’ll definitely improve with time

  9. I think it’s so useful and best google web application for Persian users.
    Thanks so much.

  10. I think it’s so useful and best google web application for Persian users.
    Thanks so much.
Oops…forgot to say great post! Looking forward to your next one.

  11. It’s the same with other languages, try arabic for example. Point is you sort of get the main message.

  12. Dear Kawthar,

When you use this tool, you think you’d better not used it! It really cant translate a simple sentence.
You say its in ALPHA mode, but its in pre-ALPHA mode, I believe!

  13. your persian ( farsi ) english translator is terrible. if you can ‘t get some decent and professional help to fix it, you better shut it down. cuz it’s not helpful at all.

  14. your persian ( farsi ) english translator is terrible.

You should address this concern to Google, not us.

  15. I’ve tried the Farsi translation and it really is bad. It’s useful only for gaining some understanding of the topic of the article. People just need to know not to rely on it for anything more than that. So, it’s better than nothing, I think.
    I hope it’ll improve soon.

  16. beter than nothing. needs alot of work i think a persian or two speaking geeks would help.

  17. when something dosen’t work the way it supposed to, it sould be left alone. by making a false hope of communicating with the outside world, when the tools don’t work properly, it is very shity and dishonest thing to do with all those pepole in distress. when something is sucks, it’s just simply sucks. whether you do something right to help other people, or you don’t you a damn thing at all.

  18. I’ve test it with this sentence:
کارتون بد نیست. ولی یک مقدار ایراد دارد.ـ

    It means:
Your service is not bad. But has some problems.

    Google translates it to:
Animation is not bad. But a value is objectionable.

I know that its very hard ;)

  19. Just wanted to thank you for ur effort to launch Farsi translator web site and i think it will help every one .. Hope you can improve on it so the news can coem across the world faster and makes it easier for other nations to know our language and hiratage and what Iran is all about

  21. Dear ali a,

Google Translator is not related to us. Its a Google’s tool which has no connection with MEY.

  22. ماده شیر

    GOD BLESS IRAN’s
LIONESS WOMEN & GRANT THEM SUCCESS & PEACE
    - A Christian In Solidarity with the Suffering and Oppressed Peoples of a World at War

I used google translator to put together the above message for my car window.
I *hope* the first word is FARSI for “LIONESS” or a female lion.

If not, maybe the green color I used will get the message across.

  23. i can’t even get it to translate into something remotely similar to english, it’s just a bunch of jabber, only romanized. x]

  24. Because the Google Farsi translation is in beta test and there are many bugs in it..

  25. I think it is unfair to place it all on their sholders. If you understand the problem then you take measurs to have it come out right , like typing it in the way it is said in persian so the the sentis is placed properly. It takes a long time to even undersand other speech and you want a computer to do something that you own minde takes years to get and you don’t have a logic boundry. somethings will take years to put right english just has a simple build for logic with nothing to repeat and most words only mean one thing in any context, not four in one.
