WHEN YOU ASK FOR DEMOCRACY, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. ALL DEMOCRACY MEANS IS RULE BY THE MAJORITY. IT DOES NOT MEAN "LIBERTY" OR "FREEDOM" OR "JUSTICE"! JUST "MAJORITY RULE". So, 51% of the voters can vote to take away your rights, or property, or perhaps to ravage Ahwaz (Arabistan, or Khuzistan, as they call it) and steal its oil for the benefit of the Persian majority; or they can deny rights to the Kurds in their original homeland (Iranian Kurdistan). Democracy is itself no guarantor of liberty or freedom. The US Constitution does not even MENTION democracy, and of those leaders who wrote the Constitution, several opposed it openly, and NONE supported it openly. The constitution of the US emphasized LIBERTY only. If democracy itself is a blessing, how do you explain the century of genocide against the Native Americans, during which they had NO rights or even citizenship? And most of the world has had slavery, but only in the US did slavers rape the girls and women they "owned" to give them babies, which (their own children!) they then sold to other owners far away, to keep the poor mothers from trying to escape to find their stolen children? Until 50 years ago, it was illegal in most of the US for persons of Asian or African origin to marry persons of European origin! Is this the "democracy" you seek? G.W. Bush took the presidency of the US by a brilliantly-exercised coup d'etat: he had the Supreme Court of the US halt the counting of the votes while he was momentarially ahead. After he was sworn in (by the Supreme Court!) the votes were counted, giving his opponent a clear majority! Democracy? Yep, that's exactly what it is. Who out there can deny that the US is the paramount in democracy? But how many of you want this "blessing"?

This is the system that has given the world the worst act of terrorism ever. "Terrorism" is defined (by the US State Department) as an act of violence directed against a civilian population, to achieve a political goal. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed with nuclear bombs resulting in over 400,000 deaths. The US position? It was to force Japan into surrender (a political goal)! The US mined the harbor of Nicaragua, and when their government went to the World Court for justice, the US (one of the original creators of the Court), refused to repond. And the attacks from Florida against Cuba, the war against VietNam, the war against Iraq, the bombing of Beirut, Tripoli, Khartoum, Cambodia; the invasions of Grenada, Santo Domingo, Nicaragua; etc., etc.,etc.
How did Hawaii become part of the US? Armed Anglo-American settlers migrated there and when they were numerically strong enough, overthrew the indigenous monarchy and declared a republic; they then asked the US to take possession of the colony in their name, making the plot secure! When more settlers arrived and their rule was secure, it was eventually made a "state".
Is this what we want to inherit? A system based on hypocrisy, that only works because of the mass stupidity and ignorance of it's citizenry?

I don't know what will be the solution for Iran, but they should think twice before blindly following the US! The same applies to any third-world nation or state.

I like to remind those who believe that the West is leading these protest to let them know that that's not the case. We are an independent people who want to normalize relations with all. We have no ill-will against any nation.

Iranians got rid of the Shah 30 years ago because he was an oppresser, they are doing the same thing now. Except now it requires a new bravery which as you see both our young and old people are showing to the world. Iran unlike some the nations in the region have experienced with both sets of dicatorship secular and religious and have come to the conclusion, that democracy is the best system for us. While Iranian are very religious people, i think most of us have come to the conclusion that our religious believes must be expressed in freedom rather than forced. We can practice it on our own and don't need Mr. Khamenei as the Supreme Leader to protect us until the return of the Mehdi.

As to the question of the protest being only in Tehran, let me inform you that there have been protests in Isfahan, Shiraz, Ahvaz, Mashhad, Tabriz, you can see their clips on youtube. Today there were strikes in the Kurdish region (the region that according to the Ministry of the Interior Ahmadinejad "won"), they were so happy he won they went on strike.

As for some you who you say that you respect Iranians, then why do you insist on supporting the leaders who kill them?

I'm agreeing with Alain. Iran's influential meddling in not just Lebanese but many other Arab countries is disturbing especially with their funding of terrorist groups and it doesn't make them any better than the Israel we all criticize here who are on the same boat in terms of terrorism and corruption as Iran is. Just like Arabs speak up against Israel and its war crimes the same should be noted about Iranian backed terrorist organizations. americans of course they are all standing up for iran right now but where were they when people were being shot at in Iraq and imprisoned for being critical of the american government? who by the way are backing the worst dictators in the history of the middle east.

America, Israel, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and whatever else, they are the same. Corrupt and self centered, willing to kill to protect their economic and political interests. Now the future is in the hands of the people, not any government.

Alain H says:
an Iran that will not meddle in our affairs
but he is so pleased with the Saudi sheikhs who are devastating Lebanon with their money, not for serving the Lebanese people but to serve their agents in Lebanon…

Devastating with money? you mean the hundreds of millions of dollars they invest in lebanon? I as right wing christian have no problem with saudi arabia and the piles and piles of cash it has doted on lebanon but i MOST definitely have a problem with Iran's perpetual meddeling in our affairs and the piles and piles of weapons it ships to the terrorist organisation cheesebollah.\

PS: don't patronise the rest of us, we hate israel as much as the next moral human being _ u should see my youtube channel _ but to denounce one kind of terrorism and support another, well that's just 'American'

Laila,
I really respect the Irabian people. I am with the Iranian People and what with Ahmadi Nejad nor mousawi. The Iranian people should stand strong and dont listen to those who are using them against their own government!! I really hope there would be a peaceful end for this problem and Iran to stay strong and dignified ... I really appreciate the Iranian people who could create such a strong state... or you would like a state like Egypt and Saudia Arabia just to apply what the West order them to do?
