People in Iraq Rally in Support of the Iranian Protesters

July 21st, 2009Fatima (Saudi Arabia)

Green Rally in Baghdad, Iraq

This past week, Iraqis gathered on the streets of Baghdad donning green flags and ribbons, to show their solidarity with the protesters in Iran. This display of support is especially amazing given the history of official animosity between Iran and Iraq, which culminated in a protracted and bloody war between the countries (1980-1988). Those Iraqis in the rally showed that they won’t fall for the arguments of division and hate. These people, who were raised on anti-Iran propaganda under Saddam Hussein, know better. They know that their solidarity should be with the people demanding justice all across Iran, and not with the regime that violently oppresses them. I hope more Arabs will follow suit.
