I for one would agree with all these principles, and would say that these principles are held dear by virutally all democracies around the world. These are the kind of principles that bring and sustain freedom. These principles work not because the U.S. says so, but because rational minds have come up with them as a way of promoting the greater good. It was this kind of thinking that created the United States of America in the first place, and that continues to inspire others to follow the same model, not because it is imposed by force, but because it captures the aspirations and imaginations of freedom loving people in the best way possible.

I hope that Iranians find the strength, the wisdom, and the support to make their dreams come true.

The problem is not to support or not "human rights" !! The problem is in the hypocrite discourse itself:

While the States support feudal, autocratic, theological, and oligarchic regimes in the regions... it allege supporting human rights, or actually uses "human rights" and "democracy" to occupy the region and plunder the resources!!!

How come the Americans speak of human rights while shipping the most fatal weapons to an occupying regime like the zionist entity to use it against the civilian of Gaza?

How come the States support a Feudal and backward regime that suppress the women like the Saudi one while speaking of women freedom?

How the American support a corrupt authority who kills prisoners under the eyes and the direction of the CIA, while alleging supporting "freedom of speech"?

Stop lying !!

The Iranian will be enslaved, just like the Arabs now, if they listen to the lies of the Americans "democracy" and "human right"... these are just means to enslave the world...

America as a devastating blind power that sabotage wherever it steps !!!

There is no question that regardless of the rhetoric to the contrary, each nation, including the U.S., acts in its own self-interest.

If the U.S. ends up supporting regime change in Iran, it will not be simply to promote human rights. It will be due to a whole host of pragmatic calculations: to protect the free-flow of oil, to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power, to stop a nuclear arms race in the region, to stop Iranian foreign policy ambitions, to stop the funding for terror, and yes, to protect Israel.

However, in this instance, there seems to be a strong correlation between the interests of the Western powers, and the aspirations of the majority of Iranians.

As you suggest, for example, a nuclear Iran would not be in the best interest of the Iranian people, since it will allow the mullahs to consolidate their hold on power, and to stifle dissent. It would provide them with cover to do as they wish internally and externally. Therefore, even though the self-interest of the key players may be somewhat different, they do come together in the goal of creating a free and democratic Iran, in which there is a distinct separation between church and state.

I would also agree that economic sanctions will not bring about regime change. Ultimately, the people will have to unite in common cause, and be willing to make the supreme sacrifice for that cause. It is possible, however, that such a revolution could be triggered by strong sanctions such as cutting off refined petroleum products, and by a military attack on the nuclear installations. But even then, as you suggest, the people will have to rise up in defiance, and with a committment that deconstructs the tenacity and will of the current regime.

US conflicts with the IRI have nothing to do with the basic elements of democracy and Human Rights in Iran. US concerns are derived from the fact that the IRI is stirring sectarian conflicts in Iraq, and its nuclear ambitions can be a future danger for the western interests in the region especially it threatens the existence of Israel.
