Kathryn Bigelow Is Not Alone

Each Wednesday, we’re posting images or videos that we think speak loudly for themselves, with little commentary needed. We want to hear from you: What do they say to you? What do you see in them, and what feelings do they bring about?

As the Oscars slowly fade as news this week, we’re sharing a selection of clips and trailers from films made by women. A special thanks to Women Make Movies and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for featuring the good work that female filmmakers do and for posting these clips.

When Sexism Was Sexy

Hit shows like “Mad Men” depict an era when being smooth and being sexist were, to many people, one in the same. While things have certainly improved, some industries seem blind to the changes. Take advertising. A gander at the Super Bowl ad cycle this season shows much of the same: real men are violent; they eat whatever tastes good; they care primarily about the TVs or cars; they are tamers of women. While the images are different, the message in those ads and those of the “Mad Men” era aren’t.

Below, you’ll find some of the most blatantly sexist ads from yesteryear…

Dora the “Prettier” Explorer?

Much has been said over the past couple of years about the making over of iconic girls’ cartoon characters like Rainbow Brite and Dora the Explorer. There’s a reason behind the outrage. In a country where girls are exposed to increasingly homogenized images of beauty and trained to wear high heels as quickly as to read, the transformation of what were once some of the least sexualized characters into lush-eyelashed, long-legged fashionistas is troubling, to say the least.

Feminism on the Wall: Public Art in Brooklyn

A mural project on the wall of a grocery store in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, New York.

The 10 figures are looking into the sunrise, pensive and optimistic. A young woman and child stand facing the figures, in front of an abstracted Brooklyn skyline, also optimistic. The young, Muslim girl holds a dove in her hand hoping that it is indeed, a new day.
