As the Oscars slowly fade as news this week, we’re sharing a selection of clips and trailers from films made by women. A special thanks to Women Make Movies and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for featuring the good work that female filmmakers do and for posting these clips.

When Sexism Was Sexy

February 17th, 2010

Hit shows like “Mad Men” depict an era when being smooth and being sexist were, to many people, one in the same. While things have certainly improved, some industries seem blind to the changes. Take advertising. A gander at the Super Bowl ad cycle this season shows much of the same: real men are violent; they eat whatever tastes good; they care primarily about the TVs or cars; they are tamers of women. While the images are different, the message in those ads and those of the “Mad Men” era aren’t.

Below, you’ll find some of the most blatantly sexist ads from yesteryear…

Eve Ensler on Embracing Your Inner Girl

February 3rd, 2010

Let’s Just Make Fake People

January 13th, 2010

Given the proliferation of slideshows featuring nip slips and wardrobe malfunctions, it’s a wonder how newspapers and blogs even have time to report..you know..actual news. While these slideshows are often recycled images of celebs on the beach or musicians making unflattering limo exits, the New York Daily News this week created one with some substance.

A Ban, a Man, and His Minaret

January 6th, 2010

In November, Swiss citizens voted to ban the construction of minarets. The move shocked democratic leaders across the globe and disappointed Muslim communities that have been struggling for years to find common ground with non-Muslims. A large minority of Swiss citizens spoke out against the ban. One man, 46 year-old Guillaume Morand, took the route of civil disobedience.
